I think that can be repaired.  Worth a try at least

If the rust isn't too deep it might be fun to use the current rust as the beginning of rust blueing.

Also check out Evaporust. That stuff is EASY to use, cheap and works wonders.

Looks like it has water damage since the grip and other parts would have melted away if it got too hot. I would refinish

Mostly water damage yes, some smoke and heat. Plastic grip appears unharmed, but the p22 that was nearby has obvious heat damage.

The smoke seems to have given the wood furniture a rather interesting appearance I have to admit.

Soak it in motor oil and see if you can get it apart

Strip it down, blast it with 80 micron alumina oxide, and refinish with norrel's moly resin.

I did this with a beat to hell AK last year and it turned out nice.

Oil it up real good (dunk in bucket of oil), load a magazine and shoot it.

Video the event. It's an AK, it'll be ok.

That's not bad at all.  E tank, lube, & shoot.

defininately would try to bead blast it to see what I'm working with, and then make appropriate repairs.... I Wouldn't give up on it.

That's not that bad.  I think it could be cleaned up.

Maybe replace some springs but that's be about it.

If you can get the internals out of it, scrub them down good or use an electrolysis tank to get the rust off.

Personally, I'd leave the receiver as is. It looks cool and it has a hell of a back story. Maybe clearcoat it?

If it were me I would soak it in vinegar, or citric acid, or evaporust, or Coke or whatever you want.  Then I would take it out and wipe down everything with a Scotch Bright Pad with total disregard to appearance.  I would go full on Mogadishu.  Then I would soak it in Oil and then spray it down with Shooters Choice Rust Prevent (it smells like cocoa butter and leaves a non greasy finish on it).  I would lightly work the wood with some oil and a rag to break them in real good and then I would shoot the shit out of that thing.  After you document it on here this will turn into a 500 page thread of people posting photo's of their purposely rusted and beat up AK's.

Run the electrolysis on the separate parts, that'll retain as much good metal as possible. Any metal removal technique might give you more pitting than you'd like (techniques like sandblasting, acid etching, etc....faster, but nastier results). I agree with doing an assessment of the heat treated parts, see if they're now annealed. Also agreed all springs should be replaced.

Anyway, at that point, I'd oil it up and go shooting. I expect it should be fine, and with the electrolysis technique you might be surprised how good it actually turns out.

as other said; rust remover, new springs, and you're good.

Don't let the Aimpoint PRO from a house fire out survive an AK. I'd try the soaking tips that have been suggested. Hopefully you can salvage it since it definitely has character now.

I'd soak it in oil for a bit, replace the recoil spring and shoot it.
Not much to loose, and your story sounds WAY better than "threw it down the driveway" .

If you can sand blast it I've got a stainless tub and I have to check but I believe the chemicals to parkerize I could loan you. I'm not good about remembering to reread threads so IM me if I forget and you want to borrow the stuff.

ETA: The tub was big enough to do my 1919 but it was broken down.

After seeing the disassembled pics, it looks in decent condition to just refinish, replace a few springs and fire it.

Yep.  I'd exhaust quite a few options before I gave up on a registered SBR receiver.  And all of them cost less and take less time than registering a new one.

Oil and ammo.

If it fires, then decide on how much refinishing to do.

Take lot's of good pictures.

Use the electrolysis method to remove the rust.  Clean it up, lube it up and shoot it.

Document it well, it'll be a great story.  That gun is salvageable.

It's an AK. You could likely stomp the charging handle to free the bolt up, throw a magazine in it, and shoot it.

Throw a piece of rope on it as a sling and it's now a Somali pirate clone.

I like this.

Make it functional.  But don't pretty it up.

Everyone has beautiful SBRs.  How many have one that survived a house fire?   I'd do just enough to it to get it running, perhaps even running reliably, and call it a day.

I'd do this too.  Send them pictures.   A non-gun person is going to take one look at that and say it is fucked.

Hose it down with WD40 and hit it with a brass wire brush.   Let it soak a few days and keep it wet.   Bet you can break it down clean it up and shoot it if nothing is actually broken.
