I'm curious how "fuck" can harm a child when stated in public.
Does it make their ears bleed or something? |

Lights get awful bright when someone is putting you under them. See, people are wonderful creatures. Even though most now days have few morals and little respect, when they see someone standing up for long forgotten values, they tend to support the person defending them and automatically vilify the shit heel that feels the need to make the world his toilet. Cashiers will remember you as that guy. Anyone within earshot will be either silently or publicly cheering the dressing down that you would be receiving. When people see someone doing something good like that they tend to join in. You leave red faced and angry or embarrassed. I and the others you see looking down on you have effectively ruined your day. Everyone that saw you in the confrontation now has an opinion of you. You never know when you will meet them again. Don't believe me? Look at the reaction people give the young kid that opens the door for people. Just because people don't apply those values today doesn't mean they won't support them when the time arises. The beauty of that is that if you act the way you describe, someone less controlled than I am will kick your shit in when you act in your shit heel manner. No one will feel sorry for you. Sooner or later it will happen, and as you bitch about some mean bully not letting you run your mouth in the way you like you will be icing your eye socket and bitching about mah freedoms. But I'm sure you would just smile and walk away. That is the beauty of free speech. You can act like a shit heel and I can treat you like one. In public. The only way to give curse words any power is to freak out about them. They're just words....it's kind of retarded we make some phonetic phrases vulgar, yet another one that sounds different but means the exact same thing are ok around kids. It's like saying "bless you" after a sneeze, really, a silly holdout from long gone "polite" Victorian language. There's no fucking point in a rational society for exclamatory language to be bad and hidden from people. Frack your feelings about it, too. How far are you willing to let that go? Some pathetic thug going on, describing explicit sexual acts he wants to do to some other female he sees in a store accompanied with vulgar actions, in front of kids and old ladies? IMO, we have decay of manners and decency because this behavior is not called out. Same question as before: And what actual damage does it do if someone does this? When did you first hear sex talk? Did it damage you? How? Are you a student of history? Many respected historians agree that many great empires/civilizations were not conquered, but crumbled from within. They had a total collapse of morality and degraded value system that lead to their decline. Greeks, Persians, Romans, etc. there are many examples. I'm sure you'll poo-poo the idea though. When a society no longer values good moral behavior, and immoral or bad behavior becomes the norm....then the decline begins. Good manners are a sign of self control and intelligence. Try it. |

While standing in line at the return desk an old man at the back of the line was bitching and moaning and about some incident in the parking lot. In addition to other profanity he dropped the F bomb. There was a father and a small daughter standing right in front of him. I turned around and chastised the old man asked him to watch his language as there was small children around. Should I have minded my own business? (If I was in Alabama should I have called the cops to have him arrested?) Your Alabama comment isn't completely correct. Yes, Disorderly Conduct covers offensive speech. The thread that got your panties in a wad isn't about offensive speech, it was about an entitled punk ass brat who threw an object at police who are trying to control a large typically unruly crowd. Why did you feel the need to chastise some guy for exercising his 1st Ammendment rights? You're no better than the cops your attempting to make fun of. Huh? The ER can be a pretty foul-language-rich environment as well (I think some of my older battle-axe ER nurses used to be truck-stop waitresses... And I'm no prude myself... )... Though I see plenty of kids who already have it in there... And their parents feign surprise (but don't discipline them) when their darlings bust out with it in the ER. So, no actual harm. OK. Try it. View Quote Well, my question was how it harmed you. That would be the first step in determining how it harms a society as a whole. Strangely, there doesn't seem to be any real harm from hearing the word "fuck" or even "cuff". Yes, I am a student of history. If you have any actual evidence that dirty words have brought down any civilization, I would be interested to see it. But, strangely enough, I think that if you went back to ancient Rome and started yelling "fuck", no one would know what the hell you were talking about. So I doubt if it was the "F" word that did it. |

You really don't have to be a confrontational tool to point out that someone's being rude.
If it really bothered me, I might say something along the lines of, "I'm sorry, sir, but do you mind toning it down a bit? My son has a tendency to remember and repeat anything he hears, and it would make for an awkward conversation if he repeats what you're saying at school or in church." Now, the person in question might be rude in return, but that creates a teachable moment for the child. "Well, that was rude, wasn't it sweetheart? Rude people use rude words, and we don't want to be rude people, now do we?" |

Quoted:
In public. So what happens to all of you sensitive types if the person you set out to ridicule and line out on proper public speech if they look you in the face and say "fuck off"? People like that usually aren't very bright. It's not hard to dress them down until they either STFU or try to take a swing. If they take a swing, they're in for a great big fucking surprise. Nah, ID just tell you to mind your business and laugh. Yeah. You and Batman, heroes of the street. LOL! You spend way too much time dreaming about your personal heroics. Nobody really gives a shit until you start something that can be posted on Youtube. |

I'm pretty quick witted. I'm sure I could make him more of an embarrassment to himself than he already is. Usually people like that suffer from anger management issues and spend the rest of the day thinking about little old me. It effectively wrecks the rest of their day and as they go about their day all pissed about the bad man (me), they will be no doubt treated less favorably by others who sense the their anger. I'd say that is a win. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

Quoted: That's a different extreme. I'm talking about exclamatory words. "Oh fuck, hurt my hand". Why is that bad? It only is if we make "fuck" some double-secret super filthy word....when in context, it's not at all. Shouldn't be for kids, or old ladies, not 100 years ago, not 50 years ago, not in the military, not on the streets. Someone describing vulgar sex in front of children is more of an action than an issue of what words they use....but even then, it's nothing that a parent should be freaking out about. Your kids are going to hear VASTLY worse in elementary school, or on the internet, or at their friend's house. Better to use shit like that to explain things, rather than try to shield them from every ugliness. Ultimately, it doesn't hurt them or anyone else...no matter how crass. They'll learn manners by habit and example (yours), not what a thug in a store said. I heard all kinds of awful shit as a kid, I'm not a vulgar, rude person. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted: Quoted: Quoted: The only way to give curse words any power is to freak out about them.
