That's a technique, but not the preferred technique
The Shurtz’s had multiple targets set up at different ranges and were shooting at them with a high-powered rifle.
The sheriff’s office described the temporary range as east to west with targets west of the shooter. “Father and son were alternating positions; one would shoot and the other would be downrange as a spotter. When Glenn Shurtz was shooting, the release states, Jame Shurtz was in position downrange acting as a spotter. “James was struck by a single round from a .30 caliber rifle,” the release states. View Quote Update 2/23/2016: Looks like someone killed another the same way. Authorities said two men were practicing long-range shooting while another man was down range marking targets for them.
There was a miscommunication and one of the target shooters hit and killed the man down range. View Quote Practicing Long Range Shooting Skills |

Is this real? View Quote Yes, did a search in Hometown and AR15.com with description, couldn't find a dupe. Hadn't seen it mentioned, and thought it serves as a lesson for those who might be considering this approach. That's not "spotting", at least not the way I learned to do it. |

Is this real? View Quote Unfortunately, judging from the stories posted in the below thread, it's kinda common. http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_1_5/1838500_Craziest_thing_seen_at_a_public_range__Or_if_you_have_a_really_crazy_story_about_anything__share.html |

so did the guy not see his kid? I mean damn looking at a target is one thing looking at a person????
|

It's one thing to be in a rifle pit where one is safe, but this is filled with WTF?
|
|
Sanctioned DCM matches in the 90's target setters would sit behind a earthen berm down range and replace targets as needed in between matches. Never been shot at, but I know what a bullet flying by sounds like.

I feel for them but the only thing going through my head right now is 'what the fuck'.

It's one thing if they had constructed proper target pits (aka the butts) but that is just plain STUPID.

It takes a special kind of stupid. Even if you were doing something as retarded as spotting from down range why not be say 50+ yards to the right or left of the target. You don't have to be 2 feet away from something to look at it.

Jesus. That poor father. That guy has a hell of a burden to carry with him. Sucks all around.

I was at the range this one time and there was this other guy, we were the two guys who usually showed up on a Saturday morning in the summer. (before I met my wife)
The range was staggered with 25/50/100/200 ranges all about 30 yards wide maybe next to each other. He usually shot a rifle kind of slowly, testing hand loads and I mostly shot pistol. Nice guy and seemed to know what he was doing. One time he called a stop to change targets so I safed my pistol and took off my ear protection. I was just futzing around on a summer day and in no hurry. He walked over and said "You know I'm all the way over there" Pointing maybe, whatever, 75 yards away at the 200 yard range "you could keep shooting" (realistically I suppose I could not have hit him if I tried short of weirdly lobbing a pistol bullet on top of him.) I looked a little shocked then smiled like "er you're not a retard, honest" and said "Hey, I'm in no hurry, I'm fine, I'll wait" He kind of nodded and disappeared to change his targets. He came back over after he was done and said "Hey let's forget I ever said that" I said "Okay" we nodded and went back to shooting. |

Wind carried the round off target most likely. At long range it doesn't take much wind to blow a pill off target by a few feet. Darwin caught another one. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

so did the guy not see his kid? I mean damn looking at a target is one thing looking at a person???? Darwin caught another one. Sometimes you just F'up and jerk a shot. Happens. Also... one thing they taught me in driver's ed I always remembered - you drive where you are looking. I think that applies to shooting too - you shoot where you are looking. And dad probably was looking at his kid. This sort of dumb spotting technique is more common than you think. I've seen a guy do this with his wife once. I was so dumbstruck that I didn't even recognize what they were doing at first. |

Spotting scopes I bet are cheap over there he'll get a smart phone app or something. Or and I'm not advocating this get the kid closer but well out of line with some binoculars |

It makes my stomach clench just to think of anything happening to one of my children I'm fairly unemotional, I guess, but my wife called me once when she was pregnant with our first child and said the doctor said my son had an irregular heartbeat. She was barely pregnant and told me it was something that almost always resolved itself safely (which it did). I was driving back home from something work related on the thruway. I pulled off into the next rest stop and was just overcome with the thought that this little boy could just stop, like a broken little wind up toy, without ever seeing the sun, and there was nothing I could do to save him. Who would so carelessly piss away their boy's life like this? |

from the background I'm pretty sure that was airsoft or airguns, still a dumb idea |

I recall a range with bunkers made from Railroad Ties and some dirt offset to the target by a little way, a few feet...
the Targets were large Steel Silhouettes, and kids would get to sit in the bunkers and wait for the thing to get knocked down and then run out to set it up once cease fire was called. |

I venture out in that area all the time. I was out there just a couple weeks ago in fact. It's a long way to any kind of medical facility, even in a helo. I carry a TQ and some pressure dressings, but if you seriously screw up out that far, you're boned. Son might not have survived a shot to the chest even if he was closer to care... so who knows, but this stuff is in the back of my head every time I venture out there.
I was out near Kelton a few years back when a guy took a .22 rimfire ricochet to the chest while rabbit hunting in the rocks. They shut down the main road for the LifeFlight helo to land. Collapsed lung, and some blood loss, but IIRC that one lived. Sucks for the father. Terrible. |

What's the most expensive spotting scope you can buy?
Yep, lots cheaper then your own son's life. As a father myself, I do my damndest to instill safety in my kids, no matter the activity. |

This is one of the worst stories I've ever read.
Love that part of Utah.....almost the middle of nowhere. Almost. Everyone will know this family. |
