Yeah, I'd be a little spooked with waves crashing against my window.

This was my honeymoon all over again in 1995, also on royal carib.
It was so cold in the caribbean I had to buy a hoodie in cancun mexico to wear for the rest of the trip. The cardinal rule is that water ALWAYS wins. |

Almost as stupid as the freighter that tried to motor through a hurricane and sank...killing all on board.

How the fuck is it a 'vacation' to be trapped on a ship with 5000 people?
|
|
I read where the captain ordered all crew and passengers to stay inside their rooms.
Um no. |

I went on a month long cruise to the Bahamas. On our way back, we were in 18' seas... In a 48' sail boat. I was sleeping in the v-berth until some one woke me up to see a cruise ship 100 yards away, I looked out to see my port hole about 5' under water.
That video looked fun to me. |

This past week, a Royal Caribbean ship cruised negligently into a storm. Ship was damaged pretty bad and had to return home. During the storm, they were told to stay in their rooms. Here's a pic of a passenger standing straight up while the ship leans. http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnnnext/dam/assets/160208085845-06-royal-caribbean-rough-seas-exlarge-169.jpg A video from a passenger's room: http://youtu.be/sFNJzVm-0Lg Yikes. If that was a carnival boat it would have gone down I'm sure.

My wife and I (and a hundred others) were stranded on an island over night during a RC cruise to the Carribean. Cocoa Cay to be exact.

|
The captain and the cruise line were stupid to risk the possibility that the ship would encounter those conditions, they tried to cut it too close.
|
|
I want to sail those sort of seas at least once in my life. I think I will go with Cunard lines though.

There's nothing that that even compares. I've been in 50' swells in the Bering and off the coast of Oregon fishing for Hake. Its an experience you'll never forget.

My shop teacher in HS was an old PT boat engineer from the Navy. He made rolling around violently in a pond full of your own vomit, sea water and fuel oil sound like fun. |

Only cruise I've ever been on was like that. Kind of scared to try again.

Are there bulkheads for water tightness aboard a cruise ship?
|
|
LOL...
thats "calm" you should ride through a storm like that on an LST...the USS Spartanburg County... stuck in our bunks for 3 days.... |

How the fuck is it a 'vacation' to be trapped on a ship with 5000 people? View Quote More of a vacation than getting trapped in a theme park with 500,000 people, most from third world countries, and no sense of hygiene or personal space. I can sit on my ass, or walk to whatever's going on. I can participate in 50 different activities, or do nothing. A good Bourbon or mixed drink is always at hand. Every other vacation I've taken was rushrushrush, schedule, reservations, etc. I like the laid back 7 day cruise experience. Best part? No phone. I get hiking/camping, etc is for a lot of folks, I don't dig it anymore. I'm old and lazy. |

We went on two 7 days out of FL last year, and I thought the ship would be ridiculous. I found myself the only guy in the English Pub or Wine Bar at times. (Both had premium Bourbons on hand) Sure, the buffets can be crowded, but we ate at the "premium" restaurants a few times and were one of maybe 4 couples in the whole joint. There are plenty of quiet spots on the ship even during the day. |

I'm one that enjoys heavy turbulence on airplanes too... not sure why I'm like that, but it reminds me of a rollercoaster or ride of some sort. |

Pretty sure that cruise ship captain was the same captain from my first cruise. We sailed through an outer band of Sandy.
That was fun! |

I've been on a cruise in 90mph+ winds near Ireland. I went out on the stern when it was blowing about 60 and watched a little Filipino guy almost get thrown across the deck when the wind caught a door he was opening He looked at me like I was crazy.
That night I woke to all of the dresser drawers slamming open. When I got out on deck I noticed I was walking a little crooked... looked left, all I could see was sky, looked right, all I could see was water. It was blowing so hard we were listing over a bit. Fun trip |

I had a lot of fun on our cruise. Just got to go with the flow.

I'd like to take a cruise as a passenger on a freighter/container ship. Seems like an exciting yet relaxing way to travel. I don't really care about the activities on a regular cruise ship, and I don't care for crowds.
