I was thinking it sounded like a combination of pulled pork sandwiches and puppies.

So cute AND delicious.

Proximity of bystanders?

Types of walls?

Ammo type?

Bullpup what?  Shotgun?  Rifle?

Details are missing. My house has 4 split levels, the angles work out in such a way that I do not have to worry about over penetration hitting a loved one and my longest shot about 30 feet. Since my longest shot is about 30 feet, since I have been point shooting a 590 for over 20 years, and I don't have to worry about over penetration, I'll take a shotgun.
But there is another factor. Teenagers. Got four of them and between them and their friends I can't answer the door with a shotgun. I usually grab my G35 w/TLR-1 after bed and before bed time I have a 19 on me. Everybody's situation is different, from the layout and construction of their home, number of occupants, age of occupants, city, burbs, country, level of experience with one weapon over another, it all adds up to no one weapon is perfect for every situation and every home. Go over the different factors and figure out what will work best for you with all things considered. Rifle, shotgun, or pistol doesn't matter to me as long as it's practical and can be used proficiently.

Whichever you prefer?  I'm not really sure what that means.

Its pretty much THE question that needs to be answered before a choice is made.

What's the terrain like?

Also, what's the elevation and relative humidity.    #Ballisticsmatter.

I've owned all three and the bullpup is definitely the most house-clearing friendly. The barrel doesn't announce your presence as you enter a room/hallway, is easier to retain and the balance allows you to manipulate doors while still carrying the rifle at high-ready.

Shotgun. At such a close range the 556/223 won't have a chance to tumble and therefore would be less effective.

Tumble?  You mean you're using ball ammo?  Why would you even...?

I've got a decent supply of 64 grain Gold Dot 5.56.  I'm not worried about the round tumbling to be effective.

Sorry.  When I read that you keep a pistol, a sub-gun , a carbine, AND a Kel-Tech shotgun on your nightstand I assumed it was a joke thread.

You'd be amazed how tough it is to try to keep a PA Micro aimpoint rip off squinted in your eye trying to take a picture.

Only if you promise to "dual wield" two of those guns.

Choose wisely though.  When you look through that peephole realize that it could be a human in a bear mask OR a bear in a human mask.

It only hurts for a few days, and then you never have to aim a shotgun again.  Well worth it.

Assuming no short barrels.

You hear a window break downstairs and dogs barking.  You have an OAL 40" 12 gauge Semi auto shotgun (6+1), an OAL 28.15" Steyr Aug (30+1), and an OAL 34" AR15 (30+1) all sitting right next to each other.  Which would you grab to make your way downstairs with?  Imagine you had extensive experience with all 3 and had never had a functional problem with any.

Poll inbound.

*edit, you can take any flashlight you want and every gun has the same exact sights.

I like the length on the Aug, but I've got almost no trigger time on them.  I'd take the AR.

I have owned all three and I would use the AR for the following reasons.

It kills better than the shotgun

And it is cheaper to replace while it sits in an evidence room for years.
Link Posted: 2/12/2016 11:39:52 PM EDT
[#50]
My reasons for taking the AR:
1.  Low recoil
2.  Superior ability to turn cover into concealment
3.  Better able to penetrate more types of body armor.
4.  More training time with it?
5.  the 30 round mag in the mag well, plus the extra one in the redi-mag gives me more shots.
6.  Much higher rate of fire with the AR

many people put forward the number of projectiles fired by a shotgun per trigger pull, but at common "house fighting" distances, the shot has not had much chance to spread, negating that idea.

In a perfect world, I would find a reasonably priced select fire Stryr Aug with a 16" barrel and a 42 round mag for the job the OP described.
