The Colorado Territory was formally created in 1861 shortly before the bombardment of Fort Sumter sparked the American Civil War. Although sentiments were somewhat divided in the early days of the war, Colorado was only marginally a pro-Union territory [1]
(four statehood attempts were thwarted, largely by Confederate sympathizers in July 1862, February 1863, February 1864, and January 1866). The New Mexico Campaign (February to April 1862) was a military operation conducted by Confederate Brigadier General Henry Sibley to gain control of the Southwest, including the gold fields of Colorado, the mineral-rich territory of Nevada and the ports of California. The campaign was intended as a prelude to an invasion of the Colorado Territory and an attempt to cut the supply lines between California and the rest of the Union. However, the Confederates were defeated at the Battle of Glorieta Pass in New Mexico and were forced to retreat back to Texas, effectively ending the New Mexico Campaign I could be either or both ? Depending on your feels. I would have helped Gen. Sibley. |

Quoted: There's only four types of peoples: Southerners Yankees Californians Mormons You fall into Mormon territory. View Quote Interestingly, at the start of the Civil War the Confederate government was very interested in getting Mormons to join them and thus essentially cut California out of the Union. The problem was while the Mormons were sympathetic to the state's rights argument, and had no love lost for the Republican Party, they were also still kinda angry over how Southerners (specifically Missourians) treated them in the 1830s. Plus, most Mormons were from Northern states or the British Isles, and were not terribly fond of slavery. So the South didn't really have a chance. However, that didn't stop the US government from stationing a regiment of troops from California in Salt Lake City to keep an eye on Brigham Young.... |

Folks from the North West are "pilgrims", not Yankees. Other than the 11 Confederate States, most learned Soitherners would exclude those from Kentucky, Southern Missouri, Maryland, and the territory of New Mexico from "Yankee" designation.

When I moved south to Missouri, they said I "wasn't no Yankee no more".

North of New York City or around White Plains, NY to Maine is what I would call a Yankee country.
The biggest reference to a western limit would be Buffalo, NY. |

Do you live in VA, WV, NC, SC, TN, KY, GA, MS, LA, or AL? No? That is because you are a Yankee. Texas threw in for the Confederacy. As did a lot of folks throughout the territories, including the native Americans. Hell, Texas was settled by lots of folks from Georgia. In my humble opinion, "Yankees" are folks descended from those that fought for the federals. |

Quoted: Dumb thought of the day, I was just thinking thinking about it and my state was only a territory in 1863. I have always thought that a "Yankee" is someone from north of the Mason-Dixon line and east of the Mississippi river? If someone were to call me a Yankee I would probably give them a puzzled look and tell them "No I'm from the West" So I guess my question is, are people from west of the rockies, Yankees, soulless heathens, or just another non-southern non-Yankee American? My German ancestors arrival post Civil War, in the late 1800's....
And subsequent travel to the large German community in Milwaukee ..... Has left me in what would have been considered as Yankee territory by Civil War standards. Having traveled to almost all states in our country, I find the people of the current-day South, very much to my liking. |

Seemed to recall.an article , that claimed there are cows in Florida than Texas. Maybe not overall, but the largest cow calf operation in the United States is called the Deseret ranch, it's run by the Mormon church, and it's in Florida, not Texas or Utah. And my county, Okeechobee, has more cows than people, both beef cattle and dairy cows. And for people who are under the misconception that Florida is all Miami and Orlando, it's 25 miles each way from my house to the nearest grocery store. |

If your state was in the Confederacy, you're a Southerner. The exception is Florida, which is Southern north of Ocala (roughly). Anything south of that is Northern Cuba/South New York. But there are pockets of Southern Resistance in south Florida.
The states of the Northern Aggression are all yankee. Virginia is being invaded by yankees from Maryland and DC. The struggle continues to this day. The western states are Cowboys, which ain't a bad thing. The west coast states are Communists. |

If you're from California you really ain't nothin! You'd be hard pressed to find someone actually FROM Calif. In the 26yr's that I've been an 01FFL in Calif I've had a total of three (3) peoples who were born here... Born and raised there, left in 2001. Best decision I've ever made. In regards to the OPs question, back in 2000 my wife and I were debating moving to North Carolina, visited the Raleigh/Durham area and stopped into a gun shop to get a feel for the place. I asked the man behind the counter how things were in regards to gun laws, gun culture and such. His response, "Not too bad, except for all the DAMN YANKEES moving down here with their liberal views..." The venom in the term DAMN YANKEES was real. Pretty sure the War of Northern Aggression had just ended for him. I responded, "I'm from California, what does that make me?"... "You're from west of the Mississippi, you don't count for nothin..." |
