Well I did not really buy my first AR.

In 2005, the place where I work was tasked with testing one of the spray on polymers for bullet resistance. I dea was to make spray on bullet resistant armour for soft skinned army vehicles.

I was approached buy the engineer since I am the resident gun enthusiast. He gave me a budget and the testing criteria and I found building would be the best to meet the tests. Ended up building three ar's and the brd started.
When finished with testing, I was allowed to purchase the three ar's, ak,sks and a cetme with 4K of ammo for the princely sum of fifty bucks.
Government contract said we had to dispose of the testing equipment but did not specify for how much.

Now I just finished my sixth build and I am planing my seventh.

2014.

Was always an M1A fan.

Bought SR-15.

Still hate other ARs. Nothing feels as good.

Will give LaRue a try eventually.

Not disappointed in my decisions.

July 2011 I think. I took some PTO from work and had nothing to do and I got a bright idea to go to the gun store and buy an ar.

Same here, except it was the BM VMatch. Bought it at a gunshow in Frederick MD, paid $750 for it new as I remember. Not long after that I started ordering oly arms lowers and DPMS kits from Federal Arms Company, early 2000s I spent a metric ton of money with those people.

Bought an Eagle Arms 16" pseudo M4 in 1993 when I lived in CA.  The ban hit in 1994 and it instantly doubled in value.  It's still technically registered in CA under their stupid assault weapons ban so I could still keep it if I moved back.  I'd rather wax my scrotum than move back.

Around the time of this EE post but I didn't get it with any of the extras so the price a lot lower. I basically put together a period close (2000s) m4 clone (RAS, CCO, matech). Just made E5 and that was clothing allowance month!

1987. I traded an UZI 45 carbine I had paid $400 for, even for a '69 or '70 Colt SP1. Wish I still had that one, but I sold it to fund building my own. I have now built 23 various configurations.

SP1 in about 1982
$350

Still have it, with the Colt branded scope.

Took it to an Appleseed shoot two summers ago and shot a Rifleman score seven times using both irons and the scope. Obviously the old girl has not lost a step.

FWIW: I also owned an AK at the same time and an SKS. I still lived with my parents.
