I'll start with the pics, and bore you with my description and links in the end:
PICS Middle East: (They know how to have fun in Yemen) (Crouching tiger, Creeping Jihad) (judging by intact windows and upright vehicle, this is "before firing" pic) (fullauto 57mm?) (two pics of NAVAL AAA taken off ships and mounted) Looks like something out of Star Wars (60 sec video): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IMuk6FvKfT4 Another video, truck-mounted cannon that shoots gas cylinders. Lots of snackbar mentioned: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xG9MYEru3U === UKRAINE (less insane, but also interesting, especially the early models): (Mounted 14.5 AAA) Rebel T-34 and IS3 (reactivated monuments) ============ LINKS There are two big "databases" that have literally thousands of such pics. Unfortunately, they're both in Russian, but it's not like you need to speak it to understand the pics, and anyway Chrome auto-translate should be perfectly sufficient to navigate. The first is a community in Livejournal blog called "Shushpanzer" (means ~"Weirdpanzer"). This is probably the more hilarious one, but they feature any sort of weird armored vehicle - Kurd's insane 3-story things, stuff made for sci-fi movies, WWI prototype armored cars, etc. Navigating is also not easy, they have tags below images but those are generally limited to country (Syria, France, etc.) and period (2015, WWII, WWI, etc.). Still, hilarious way to waste time: shushpanzer-ru.livejournal.com/ The other one is originally envisioned for tracking damaged armored vehicles in the Ukrainian conflict, but it has a "Weirdpanzers" section that currently has upwards of 1200 of improvised armored trucks and technicals. The ones that were made by various militias on both sides in the very beginning tend to be funnier. http://lostarmour.info/shushpanzer/ Also, I made a cheat-sheet explaining the layout of that database: http://oi58.tinypic.com/34zk7zb.jpg (Discussion of why&how are "technicals" are used will be added in 2nd post) |

Holy CRAP!!!
Firing that Russian Howitzer with the big muzzle break off that poor Chevy truck... It would be awesome to see the poor bastard in the cap crap himself as all the glass blows out and the roof is crushed in.... BIGGER_HAMMER |

Also, if anyone finds cooler stuff in those databases - feel free to post here. I couldn't find any Kurdish War Wagons on short notice (except the one in video), and those tend to be the most impressive designs.

That gatling technical = 2 rounds on target, 2,000 into the clouds.

Odd, at 0:22 seconds, an English voices says, 'C'mon Baby.'

As a former TOW gunner, I find all of these vehicles to be appropriate targets. In fact, they are turning me on a little bit.

Odds are all that "Armor" is mild steel. Ball rifle ammo goes right through that shit like butter.

Does anyone know more about how they activated those old monument tanks? I assumed such things would have their guts taken out before display, but I guess someone got lazy.
I'd love to see if they could activate some of the old MiGs sitting around all over Eastern Europe. |

Here's a Russian WWII assault gun being restored and fired up: Youtube |

View Quote I learned that one reason the Germans lost WW2 is because their tanks were really advanced and required specialized parts that would take weeks to replace. Compare that to the Russian tanks that were very simple and could be replaced with parts that were interchangeable from a truck transmission. |

There was a case during riots in Budapest(?) where an old tanker managed to fire a T34 sitting on the square for the past 40+ years, I think. Turns out there was still compressed air in the ignition system. He ran out of steam after like 50 yards, but scared the pants off the riot police. There are two videos of that IS3 above: Government forces capture the tank after the rebels abandoned it (too slow and heavy for the retreat route, from what I understand) The tank participated in one successful attack, reportedly, and even fired the main gun with some 122mm arty ammo (would probably have to reduce the powder charge?). No info on that T34, although the scuffing on it may be battle damage? Restoring monuments / training aids was not uncommon in the early months, that "Strela" that you could see in all the news saying "rebels got heavy AA" was a restored training aid from local ROTC. They also restored 1960s armored transporters (below). Of course, once they captured enough UAF stuff, and got Russian armor, all those shenanigans were abandoned: |

So much ingenuity.
Now if they'd just put that much effort into actually fighting. |

Some real Mad Max rides there. Even the T-34/85 with the anti-shaped charged cage looks cobbled together. Only the JS-III (or is that a T-10M) looks like a real AFV.

eta: Anyone else having issues with pictures not showing up in threads for the last few weeks? I'm on an Android tablet. |

Too bad the quality and quantity of this stuff will tail off.
Since we involuntarily provided ISIS with all the uparmored Humvees, tanks and trucks they could ever want, it kind of kills their creative juices. |

I bet a lot of that Mad Max armor bullshit goes by the wayside after the first engagement and things return to gunned up pick ups. |

The sandbags piled on Shermans didn't do anything to stop a KwK 42 from spitting a round right through either but they boosted morale and crew confidence, same thing.
About the most the mild steel plate would do is maybe stop some splinters from a Grad, though really it's a legitimate concern too. |

I would imagine it's a lot like WW1, stalemated without armor and consistent air support. The technicals are an attempt to break the "trenches" much like early ww1 tractor/tanks. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:
