I had always heard hollywood scuttlebutt was that they hired an actual previously convicted counterfeiter to advise on the process. Rumor mill had it that he actually made the plates and the production actually filmed themselves making counterfeit money... but the other half of the rumor was that the production had SS on set and they destroyed everything they made. Not sure how true any of that really is.

There were some documentaries done on PBS about counterfeiting discussing how forgers did it back then. They never explain how it was really done correctly. |

I just watched this again a couple of months ago as I found the BluRay for $3.
Had not seen it is a while. Holy Tight Pants, Tight Groupings Batman. Counterfeiting scenes still held their own. |

Right down to the orange plastic mask and the photo engraver. You needed three plates for the old bills. Two for the fronts and one for the backs. Don't forget to stock up on poker chips... Question is, since the old bills are still legal tender, why don't they still counterfeit them. |
|
Haven't seen it in a long time. Thanks for the reminder. Excellent movie.
And yes, the ending is rather shocking. |

There are still some "organizations" who use Bureau of Engaving and Printing-quality presses to counterfeit USD. |

That press was the real deal.
One of the best movie chase scenes. M16 goodness too. My wife used to manufacture those plates at the company she worked. They also made the exposure equipment and scrubbers. |

Seems like I have seen it as a rental though I thought I watched it a year or two ago |

It's on youtube for free. I have not seen it, but I didn't start working in printing till the 90s. With the right paper and equipment anything can be counterfeited. The key with money is the paper with the line in it. The foil stamping can be done easily. There are laws about printing coupons that look like dollar bills, they have to be 50% bigger or something like that.
Where I work the word counterfeiting will get you terminated on the spot. We also do not print anything that looks like paper money. That shit is a big deal in the printing business. |
