I would like to buy my daughter a quadcopter drone for Christmas, but no absolutely nothing about them. I would like to keep the budget at $100 or less and would like it to have some sort of a decent camera if possible.
It doesn't need to be anything real fancy - just fly and take video....Been looking primarily on Amazon, but can go wherever. I have started looking at old threads, but man...these things are evolving very quickly, so I am thinking there is a better opportunity to get something decent in my price range? Thanks for the help! |

First, learn to fly. Phoenix or Realflight are the best simulators out there. Use them, and save yourself a lot of time and money.

I learned to fly with one of the early DJI Phantom's. No camera...just bare bones stuff.. As long as you don't get too aggressive with speed or acrobatics you should be fine. I've flown mine in 40 mph gust of wind, the gps does an amazing job of stabilizing the craft. I'm looking to upgrade so I can go FPV. |

How old is she? Your budget is a little tight for something that pretty much flies itself. I have a Hubsan H107 that I am very fond of, it flies great. They come in many different configurations, at or below your price range. They don't fly themselves though, you have to have some pilot skill.

View Quote Yeah, the Hubsan is the best choice if you still want that RC "seat of your pants" feeling, where you have to do the work to keep it level and flying. It has auto-level and a drift calibration, but you still pretty much have to give the controller constant input to maintain control. I have an X4 H107C with the mini camera. Not real-time VR or on your remote, but has a micro SD card that it saves the videos to. It's my entry into the after-hours office "chopper wars". The others if you want it to be semi-automated and working harder with it's own internal software to maintain it's own stability. If you can go up to about $100 and your daughter is excited about Star Wars, the Air Hogs Millennium Falcon quadcopter has good reviews. The foam shell shaped like the Falcon offers good protection for the fans. (No matter what You WILL be buying more propeller replacements, but this design will cut that down..) It has good stability software/code to make it pretty easy to fly, even in tight quarters inside the house and has a good reputation even with some more "hard core" mini-quad enthusiasts. http://www.amazon.com/Air-Hogs-Control-Ultimate-Millennium/dp/B00U7EXH72/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1449963430&sr=8-1&keywords=millenium+falcon+drone |

Hubsan x4 with HD. Spectacular little drone, but requires practice. Get extra parts. |

Mine came with a prop guard, which is a good idea for a brand new operator but I hate how it flies with it so I never use it. |

Here is one but not many people besides myself gave input. http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_1_5/1813026_Best_Beginner_Drone_with_live_camera_controller_for_the_kids_.html As in that thread I have to recommend the Syma X5C-1 or X5SC for no other reason than durability. I have beat the hell out my X5C-1, dropped it from 40 ft multiple times, crashed it into trees, had it stuck outside in a tree for 2 weeks, and it is currently stuck in another tree...all on the original parts. I have a WLtoys V686G, it has a much better camera but is a brittle and cheaply made toy. I abused it much less than the X5C-1 and ended up busting an entire arm off it, the landing legs off, and the battery compartment door. I rebuilt it, dropped it from 10 feet and busted a motor support. I cannot recommend that for a beginner. The X5SC is a redesign of X5C with stronger motors, it is rumored there is a stability problem in strong winds though. |

The Hubsan is pretty dang tough too, the only time I've actually broken mine was slamming it into a building at about 20mph (flying at night and got blinded by a light). All it broke was a motor, which was easy to replace. The arms on it tend to pop apart when you crash, but they pop right back together. I haven't even been through that many props, and I've crashed it countless times. |

A great starter quad for her to learn on would be a Skywalker 1306, these are crash proof. When she gets good she can take the cage off and fly it. These are great for someone who is very young.

Compare size and what you get for the price.

Quoted: Syma x5c, and buy extra props, batteries, and motors. View Quote Extra batteries yes. Extra props and motors may not be required but always good to have on hand. I have the Syma X5C-1 and it is very durable. It was my first non-micro done. I crashed the heck out of it. First flight the wind took when it was about 100 feet up. It lost signal and crash into the road and worked fine afterwards. Second flight, at night, same thing. Found it 30 minutes later in someones back yard. Multiple crash after crash as I was learning to fly and it still functioned. Labor Day I got it stuck 50 up in a tree in Michigan at a friends cabin. Two weeks later he returned and found it. I visited a few weeks later, put a fresh battery in it and it flew like a champ. Got it stuck in a tree twice more that trip but recovered it. By recovered I mean shook the tree until it fell to the ground. Took it on a vacation and filmed over a swimming pool where the low battery light came on and it settled into the pool. I dried it out, put a fresh battery in it and it flew like a champ. Last Friday I was flying it behind my house and got it stuck 40 feet high in a tree. I was hoping the wind would knock it down but it didn't. Five more days of exposure including 3 days of rain. Finally knocked it down, 40' drop on to asphalt and nothing broke. I dried it out, put a fresh battery in, and the thing flew like a champ. All this on original props and motors. The fact that it is do durable makes it the funnest to fly, because I'm not concerned about breaking it if it crashes or hits something. I wish it had a better camera is all. I was wanting to go more advanced but there is now a redesigned X5SC and I want to get it even though my X5C-1 still works great. |

Dang it.. the curse of arfcom has struck.. I came in here, just to read up on FUTURE drone purchases, as I'm just learning how to fly small "estes" brand mini drones and figured in a few weeks I could afford to drop 150 or so on a decent "big" quad, when I started liking the JDX509 package.. $120? Maybe in a few weeks right? Let's check ebay..
At $40 shipped, I decided to spend some of my dream rifle funds.. :( http://m.ebay.com/itm/JD509-FPV-2-4Ghz-4CH-RC-6-Axis-Quadcopter-Drone-with-2MP-HD-Camera-RTF-UFO-UAV-/141857484365?_trkparms=aid%253D222007%2526algo%253DSIC.MBE%2526ao%253D1%2526asc%253D20150519202348%2526meid%253D347704b99f1641a3a64a0945b23da7e9%2526pid%253D100408%2526rk%253D4%2526rkt%253D23%2526sd%253D141850841216&_trksid=p2056116.c100408.m2460 |

Cause if this thread and the drone crash vid I bought 3.
I got two Dramida Vista's and also a MJX 600 Hex copter that has a "return to home" button and also a power throttle knob. Of these two which one would be better for a 12 year old kid who has never flown anything before? I was thinking the Vista was good because of durability then I saw the MJX 600 with adjustment to throttle it down. Two of them are gifts and I'll be keeping one for myself. |
