This started in the 60's in....wait for it.....universities and colleges.
People who are losing their jobs care about it.
The professors who secretly believe in academic freedom in the classroom, but self censor because they don't want trouble, likely care about it as well.

Academia created the tiger and was content to allow it to feast on others.
No, helicopter parents with their special snowflake children created this paper tiger
It is only now a problem because university administrators and faculty no longer have it by the tail and are being eaten as well?
It's not a problem, and nobody really cares.

And it's just as irrelevant now as it was in the 60s. Guess what? Most people that went to college in the 60s just went to class, learned shit, graduate and then got jobs. The fact that some of their friends protested the war, did lots of drugs and took themselves REALLY seriously - didn't really substantially change anything about how universities work.
Which people are losing their jobs? An unpopular president/chancellor at Mizzou that faculty wanted to get rid of? Boo hoo.
Also "academic freedom in the classroom" is bullshit. There's not really any such thing.
