Looking to get into a bolt gun, probably a max of $600 for the gun and scope. Not wanting 223 or 308 and I have a 22-250.
I'll be reloading so factory ammo isn't an issue. |
|
I just got a ruger american in 708
the leupold vx3 on top puts it over your budget but there are other scopes out there that would keep you under 600 |
|
|
|
hmm. not enough $$ for anything "fun" other than .223 or .308.
I was going to say 6.5-47 lapua but the gun alone would be more than 600 and glass would be around 600 |
|
What about something in the 6mm category?
Flat shooting, good bullet selection, mild recoil, and there are plenty of options for chambering. |

Quoted: Quoted: Savage MkII FVSR, in .22LR, put a can on it, and enjoy. I don't live in a free state. Then save your money and move. Come back and ask the question again once that is done. In all seriousness, you can have all the fun in the world with an entry level .223 or .308, especially if you reload. You might be able to grab a cheap .243 R700 at Walmart for your price I guess. Or you could save a little more and buy a RPR in 6.5CM. |
|
I know it's off your list, but 223 bolt guns are a hoot to shoot.
If I had to pick a caliber I'd really like to explore from the ground up, it'd be 6.5CM. |
|
Since you don't want standard calibers, Ruger American in 6.5CM.

M48 Mauser.
8mm Mauser cartridge. $299. Update the iron sights and have fun. |

People seem to have a blast with 6.5 Grendel. I have no idea what the cost range for the rifle would be though. And there's always surplus, like SMLE's or MAS 36's or Mosin's etc.

Any of the CZ 527 variants, I would recommend the 223 chambering but they can also be had in 7.62x39 which complies with your edict. They are handy little rifles that pack well and shoot great.

Marlin .17HMR......the maker of pink mist.
Depending on what you want to spend on optics , you can easily get this rifle, scope and still have enough to buy plenty of ammo. .....and don't have to worry about reloading. Only downside is you might get bored shooting thru the same hole on your targets.....very accurate on non-windy days. |

Two options...
1) Savage Mk II FVSR. I bought one couple months ago. Absolutely loves CCI MiniMags and anything Aguila. Little itty bitty dime sized ragged hole groups at 50 yards. Cheap and fun to shoot. 2) Ruger American Ranch in .300 AAC |
|
Ruger American in .204 that is a fun, flat ACCURATE round with ridiculous velocity.
|
|
.460 weatherby. Cheap to shoot since shooting will be limited.
There really isn't another varmint round out there different enough from a .22-250 to make it fun. Therefore you need the other end of the spectrum. |
|
You know, the temptation to get a bolt gun, for me, also came with the temptation to go all out, get all the cool tactical bells/whistles, etc. Then the temptation became get the varmint version thumbhole stock, long barrel, etc. Now I wish I had just got a small, short, light sporter version that I really want to grab and take along when I am going places.
I wish Mossberg made the MVP in a light, short, sporter version. |

Savage 93R17,put the other $400 towards building another AR to flip when Bernie Sanders gets the nomination.

Hard to beat the Ruger American in any caliber you choose.
Put a Simmons or cheaper Nikon on it and enjoy. |

Finned Mosin M91, 91/30, or a Finn M39 in 7.62 X 54r for cheap bang-bang. Really any of the Finn Mosins are a fine choice. Lots of fun and the Finns put in the work to make their rifles much more accurate for the most part with better triggers than the common Soviet refurbs.. A Swedish M38 is also both a sweet and soft shooter. Ammo is not as cheap but it's available. |

Perfect starter rifle. You pick the caliber. I personally love 300 weatherby mag. Shoots very very flat. Edit I see 300 isn't available for that gun. |

Tikkas are good to go from the box.
I don't know what a "fun" caliber is but if you want something odd but effective find one chambered in 6.5x55. I would also consider a .243, .260, 7mm-08 or a .25-06. That said I hate fun. I like .308s. |
