I've lived in Reno for 12 years now.
It's definitely got quite a bit rougher and grown since I moved here (mainly Californians). That being said, it's not as bad as everyone is saying. Lots of good gun stores in the area, three big box sporting goods stores. Downtown is a shit hole, but it has always been. Northwest Reno and south Reno are pretty nice. PM me if you have any specific questions. |

Maybe check out Carson City....
Reno doesn't seem to have lived up to people's expectations. |

Once you get away from the area the prices drop. We've been looking at th enorth central area, winnemucca for starters. When i browse on line i type in SHOP and see what comes up. Do keep in mind. In NV a 8 shed is considered a Shop!. There's the usual loafing shed now turned to a shop. Where they took some corrugated sheet metal and nailed it to the from as the door. There's some real potential out there. Unfortunately you have to be willing to build for it to happen. We do like some of the real small (POP 200 ~) areas. BUT.................i'd hate to buy some place and find out the area should have been carpet bombed, during one of the .mil training runs. |

As to the guys talking about downtown I have no intention of being anywhere near downtown. I am familiar with the shopping and some of the restaurants as I have been to Reno quite a few times. My questions were regarding the housing situation. I would like to know what areas are decent within the greater Reno area. Like within 1/2 hour to an hour and somewhere with high speed internet. |

View Quote I remember you telling me that a while back when you came out for one of those shows! Downtown area sucks like any other big city. I only go down there for the fights and some of the restaraunts. Outside that, it's pretty awesome. I live about 15 miles north of Reno. 2 minutes from BLM land with miles of offroading potential, shooting, etc. I shoot 2 to 3 times a week and the only place I'd pick over Northern Nevada wuld be Montana or Arizona, Before I made the move here, I thought it was a dump, but when you're in the downtown hotels and casinos, it's easy to think that. You need to look at the surrounding areas, the neighborhoods, etc. I started looking in Gardnerville and Minden first, but found it better to go north and I'm glad I did. |

I have lived in Sparks for a little over 5 years. There seems to be a lot of hate for Reno for some reason but I haven't had any issues. Every city is going to have good and bad parts of town, Reno is no different. South Reno (Damonte Ranch area) is nice with a lot of new homes and if you want to live in Sparks look at the Spanish Springs area, that is a nice area. Haha jesus. Reno ain't so bad. There are nice areas and shit areas. If you're spending a bunch of time downtown, of course it's gonna give you a bad impression.
For housing, Northwest Reno (Somersett) and some of the area around Robb Drive is nice. South Reno around Damonte Ranch and Galena is nice, East/Northeast Sparks around Vista Blvd is nice, and some of the Spanish Springs area is pretty nice. I live in a 3bd 2bath 2 car garage house in Northwest on the edge of Somersett and it's $1200 for rent. Newer Sparks will be similar or slightly cheaper, Damonte Ranch and Galena will probably be slightly higher. You can go a little further North up i395, and a lot of the houses a bit further out Red Rock Road are on 10-40acre lots and are pretty nice and decently affordable (relatively speaking), but they are usually for sale, not rent. Cold Springs has some nice new houses for relatively cheap, but they're next to dumpy trailers and the area is meh. I grew up here, so maybe I'm a little biased... but whats not to like (aside from meth heads and a trashy downtown area)? There's tons and tons of BLM, great offroading, great dirtbiking, Virginia City is nearby, Tahoe is nearby, great skiing is nearby, all 4 seasons, desert, mountains, lakes, trees, a river, video poker machines laid in the bars, great hiking, endless places to shoot, indoor ranges, outdoor ranges, hookers (if that's your jam), machine guns, suppressors, SBRs, and there's almost always something going on downtown if you ARE into that kind of thing. I've only lived in Nevada, Georgia, North Carolina, and Alaska.. but Reno and the surrounding area has been my favorite so far. Just don't hang out in the shitty areas. Just stick to the nice areas, like Somersett: |

I love it here.
Born and raised in San Diego, Ski bummed in Aspen, lived many years on Maui, and a few years in San Francisco. So far, Reno is my most favorite place. The town itself is best described as a worn out prostitute. The location in my own option is second to none. Great skiing within 30 to 45 minute drive, Thousands of miles of off-roading, Libertarian attitude, no state income tax, low cost of living, mild weather with over 300 days of sunshine. Most importantly, you’re not living in California, but still close enough to enjoy some of Cali perks. A shot taken in my backyard (Verdi) " /> |
