The bird-mask doctor outfit has been around a little while longer than video games. From what I remember, masks like this were described having been used during the time of The Plague (700 years ago). The version seen in drawings with the bird mask, eye lenses, hat and long coat is based on a costume that was invented much later in the 17th century, but it is based on what historians have handed down as being the attire worn by the doctors sent out during the time of the Black Death. |

The beaks were filled with flowers, because it was believed that they would protect you from the plague. Although I suspect the greatest benefit was that it made things smell better.
