They have to do something - internet has made their porn obsolete, but they see magazines like Men's Health and GQ doing well. Funny part - they fought to change society, and they won. All of about six pages of naked women somewhere throughout all those ads for mens underwear, shoes, cologne, watches / jewelry and product reviews ( which are just lengthy ads ) for things most people can't afford and likely wouldn't buy if they could. Such as five thousand dollar wine racks and stupid trinkets like that. Then the interviews with people I barely ever heard of plus slanted news. What are they up to a hundred or so pages of that crap? Probably more pics of men in that thing in all those ads. Is what killed Playboy.

I think it is a bold move. Is anyone who is looking for porn still buying playboy? That seems like a very small market. If playboy is going to survive, it has to become something else. I am doubtful they will succeed, because I think all print magazines, like newspapers, are in a death spiral anyways.

I keep thinking back, and trying to figure out exactly where it happened. At some point, I was clearly transported from Planet Earth to Bizarro World. Near as I can tell, it happened between 2004 and 2007. But the world just no longer meets any of my preconceived opinions or aligns with the practical knowledge I have accumulated. I'm only 41 years old... not nearly old enough to feel this way yet. Something is out of balance out there. |
