A Maryland resident could face charges after keeping a coyote as a pet, police said.
It is illegal to own a coyote in Maryland. Authorities were called around 8 a.m. Wednesday for a report that a coyote was “running loose with a leash,” a press release from the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office reads. Animal control officers were able to catch the coyote, which was wearing a collar, “indicating it was someone’s pet.” View Quote “Due to the possible exposure of rabies from the coyote, it was humanely euthanized and sent to the state lab in Baltimore for testing,” the press release explained. Did the police also seize an "arsenal" of Acme brand products?

Shouldn't be illegal, but its a pretty stupid move. Even if you get one as a pup they start to get nutty when they grow up.
|
|
Should have put it up for adoption: "Just loves small children, and REALLY loves to play with other pets.Has a great smile".
|
|
The animal has obviously been living with someone for a while and they think it might have rabies?

They are a little too free with their acme supplied explosives to safely live around people. No body wants to be picking bird house shards out of their children after a coyote decides to pour nitroglycerin on some bird seed again. |

Knew a guy in Arizona who had a pet 'yote. Had it's shots and everything.
Of the pair, I think the 'yote was the saner. |

Illegal, etc...
But the cops pussed out by saying "It could contract rabies" as a reason for killing it. ANY mammal kept as a pet could contract rabies. By that standard, they should be shooting everyones' dogs because they MIGHT contract a disease. Just say "You're not allowed to have this pet, and it is not scared of people so we're going to euthanize it." Don't be a wuss. |

When we lived out in the country back in the early 90s my Ex and I had a pet coyote, got it as a tiny pup. It was one of the best dogs I ever had, with some exceptions. It killed my favorite cat right in front of me, took him about 1 second. We had pet rabbits in cages in the barn, they didn't last long. He did get get along with our other dogs (wolf mixes) fairly well but when we did have a rare food aggression problem it got pretty crazy.

lol
I had a coyote for a pet for about 2 years. everyone around me knew about it and loved it. My neighboor and good friend is a vet. he checked it out a and gave it shots for me and did the anti baby surgery. I found it when it was very young, mother got hit by a car. and I snatched it up as a pup you can find old pictures of it on this site if you search older posts long enough finally it just decided it wanted to leave and wondered off |

He shot one and when he got to it he found two pups. He also had a vet who was a friend. He kept them in a large kennel until they got big enough to take care of themselves. He handled and played with them daily. The first instant he opened the gate they took off without even looking back. Gone forever. |

Knew a fellow who raised coyotes when they were pups. He'd go to KFC and get their throwaways to feed them. When he wanted to assemble them, he'd sit there and howl and one by one, they'd show up and join in the chorus. Their raids on neighbors' chickens and other game compelled him to euthanize them.

There's a really fascinating Nova episode on dogs, specifically, how very different they are from wolves. It also covers how quickly full blooded foxes become unfoxlike in captivity over very few generations. Down to coat color and tail shape. It's on Amazon Prime, Dogs Decoded, it's called. Seeing the experiment with raising wolf pups underfoot and the pointing and eye contact tests was really neat. |

They are never fully domesticated. Mine was 100% around children though. Except when she fought other female dogs of course. But even with food children were completely safe around here. In fact, children could not be physically disciplined around her or she would nut up. Amazing animal to spend time with, but she was dangerous, and a lot of responsibility. |
