Remember getting the Sunday newspaper and pulling the comics section out first thing. Hoping one week for a Spaceman Spiff, the next week something with dinosaurs.
God, I miss C&H. eta.. 100 internets to anyone who can post the strip where Calvin is pounding nails into the coffee table. On my phone or I would find it myself. |
|
We do a C&H thread about twice a year around here, and it never fails to make me genuinely happy. I've got all the books, many in duplicate.
Despite everything else, at least here on arfcom we can all agree that Calvin and Hobbes and Firefly are entertainment perfection. |

I think the lines are something like Mom yelling "What are you doing??" And Calvin responds "I though it was pretty obvious.." |

I have a print out of a single frame hanging in my reloading room... not sure if its a spoof or from an actual comic. In it, Calvin and Hobbes are careening off a ledge in a radio flyer wagon and Calvin opines that "women should always wear tight dresses and men should carry powerful handguns". I couldn't find the frame on an image search, but I swear when I printed it out originally that I recalled seeing it in an actual comic at some point....

View Quote I remember reading that as a kid and thinking "this is some dark shit" Or the one where Calvin's dad shows him how the two points on a rotating record move at different speeds to this day I still think about that strip when I see records |

In the few interviews Watterson gave, he sounds pretty bitter View Quote Nah, I don't think so. He's not into fame, or money for that matter, once he had enough of it, and his expectations for money were pretty low compared to the strip's merchandising potential. He could have knocked down Charles Shulz money, millions a year, if had wanted to. He sometimes good-naturedly tweaked Berke Breathed for merchandising Bloom County to support an extravagant lifestyle. The strip is beloved, and for that reason some of the public got the idea that he owed them more. Nope. He was in it for the artistic challenge of the cartooning. He did what he wanted to do and then he walked away. |
