The building in the first few photos is a police station if I recall correctly, and was mostly empty due to the time of day. Most of the buildings in the immediate area were commercial buildings. The explosion happened at non-peak business hours so the port and these buildings were unlikely to be at full capacity. There are obviously many many more than the Chinese gov is claiming but the number could realistically be under a thousand.

Not sure I believe them either, but I assume they evacuated people when the place was on fire.

Tens of dozens? Hundreds, thousands of dozens? They could be technically correct. Which, according to Futurama, is the best kind of correct.
We'll probably never know how many there really were. |
|
"Dozens" means the cadavers they were able to find, that weren't completely reduced to ash.
Many, many people died in that explosion. ETA: The top satellite image clearly shows a cock and balls with elongating shaft. The explosion was a giant wang. |

Those aren't apartments. They're business buildings.
That said, I've heard 80 dead but wouldn't be surprised if it was more like 500. |
|
So we shouldn't expect any new $99 generators to show up at harbor Freight anytime soon.

Confirmed dead means bodies found. Total deaths always swing wildly after a disaster. It'll be months before anyone knows for sure, and even then, odds are no one knows exactly how many people were even there before hand.
You're also seeing those spots in the light of day, after the fires have been put out. The explosion was nasty, but those buildings could have been damaged by fire after people got out. Lots of the area was commercial space too. |

View Quote Have not been to to this city but I have been to Shanghai and Hong Kong...down to the ports in both cities...seems like they have a lot of living close to the port facilities due to the workers WALKING or riding bikes to work...lots of corporate dorms that hot bunk workers too...my bet is a couple of thousand at least...50K wounded...looked like a small nuke from space... |

It isn't like governments to lie.
Especially communist governments. |

Already said, but what OP is calling apartments are not, in fact, apartments.
Port area and night, most likely skeleton crews and a lot of evacuations when the fire started. If I was a betting man, I'd put the over/under on the dead at around 175 when this is all said and done. |

Dozen PARTY members, everyone else is sort of unimportant, not worthy of counting.

Liveleak has a few videos showing the victims being rescued. Lots of burned off clothing and burned skin.
|
|
They may only find a few dozen bodies, but I'll bet there are a whole lotta permanently "missing" people.

What was the official explanation of the cause of explosion?
If China was preparing a big shipment of arms to Iran or something I could someone taking them out before they got there. |

we'll have more threads about this than there are dead people from the blast

RIP to the dead but what I would give to view that explosion from a high rise 1 mile away

Looks like it was a dock area or something View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

Did anyone even live there...or was it another ghost city. City has a population of 13 million, but the area where the fire/explosion occurred wasn't exactly in the center of town. Quoted:
They don't have a clue how many people were killed. I'm guessing this. Going to take some time to get an accurate count. And then, who knows if they'll ever officially release the numbers. |

It's China. Couple dozen, couple thousand, not much difference.

China never releases honest figures and probably only a few high level authorities even know the true numbers. Better that way so they can eliminate leaks when legit numbers get leaked.
