So the "Official Government" Press releases say DOZENS DEAD...DOZENS DEAD MY ASS...more like THOUSANDS...the pics from space alone lead one to believe this was on the order of a small nuke in yield...
Look at this apartment building...blown completely through... 
Theres more than a dozen body bags here... 
Couple of hundred people probably lived in this building alone...blast was late at night...think any of them lived? 
Think anyone lived in these?

The building in the first few photos is a police station if I recall correctly, and was mostly empty due to the time of day. Most of the buildings in the immediate area were commercial buildings. The explosion happened at non-peak business hours so the port and these buildings were unlikely to be at full capacity. There are obviously many many more than the Chinese gov is claiming but the number could realistically be under a thousand.

Tens of dozens? Hundreds, thousands of dozens? They could be technically correct. Which, according to Futurama, is the best kind of correct.

"Dozens" means the cadavers they were able to find, that weren't completely reduced to ash.
Many, many people died in that explosion. ETA: The top satellite image clearly shows a cock and balls with elongating shaft. The explosion was a giant wang. |

Confirmed dead means bodies found. Total deaths always swing wildly after a disaster. It'll be months before anyone knows for sure, and even then, odds are no one knows exactly how many people were even there before hand.
You're also seeing those spots in the light of day, after the fires have been put out. The explosion was nasty, but those buildings could have been damaged by fire after people got out. Lots of the area was commercial space too. |

Already said, but what OP is calling apartments are not, in fact, apartments.
Port area and night, most likely skeleton crews and a lot of evacuations when the fire started. If I was a betting man, I'd put the over/under on the dead at around 175 when this is all said and done. |
