50 kt is plenty if you hit the target right in the kissah.

Not a practice mission.

The tail code "OT" on theF-15 says it's an Operational Test and Evaluation mission of a modified bomb or aircraft.  Quite possibly a certification test for the F-15E with that version of the B-61.

FYI - I worked for the people who flew the OT tail code for 10 years.  It was the Tactical Air Warfare Center (TAWC) at Eglin AFB, FL back in my day.  Now it's the USAF Air Warfare Center based at Nellis AFB, NV after combining with the Fighter Weapons Center back in the late 1990s / early 2000s.   Eglin is now the 53rd Wing and Nellis is the 57th Wing.

Part of me wonders if we're better off sticking to designs that have actually been tested, instead of a shiny new design that cannot be tested.

Newer would be better, but without real, no-bullshit testing, I'm not sure I want to trust our national security to a design which "should work".

better targeting, less Sunshine needed...the old ones were as big as they were because the CEP was measured in Clicks not Meters...that said, it's still amazing to me how accurate they were BEFORE the -12 when Delivery was via lob toss.

you don't need a big yield if you can hit what you want to destroy.

our doctrine has been moving away from crowd pleasers and more and more into delivering to the doorstep of who or what were want to kill.

why use a drone when you could use a cruise missile?

a cruise missile would make a lot more sense than a drone.

Through comprehensive research, public education and effective citizen action, Nuclear Watch New Mexico seeks to promote safety and environmental protection at regional nuclear facilities; mission diversification away from nuclear weapons programs; greater accountability and cleanup in the nation-wide nuclear weapons complex; and consistent U.S. leadership toward a world free of nuclear weapons.

These need to be dropped from fairly high altitude or extremely high speed to work right.

That's exactly what the video shows.  It's a precision guidance tail swap much like the JDAM.

Posted again from p.1.

In May 2010 the National Nuclear Security Administration asked Congress for $40 million to redesign the bomb to enable the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II to carry the weapon internally by 2017.[23] This version is designated Mod 12.[24] The four hundred B61-12 bombs will be used by both tactical aircraft (such as the F-35) and strategic aircraft (such as the B-2) and the Tail Subassembly (TSA) will give them Joint Direct Attack Munition levels of accuracy, allowing the fifty kiloton warhead to have strategic effects from all carrying aircraft.[25] However, refitting the 400 weapons is now expected to cost over $10 billion.[26] The B61 Mod 12 tail assembly contract was awarded to Boeing on November 27, 2012 for $178 million.[27] Boeing will use their experience with the Joint Direct Attack Munition to yield JDAM equivalent accuracy in a nuclear bomb.[28] This contract is only the first part of the billion dollar expense of producing and applying the tail kits, over and above the $10 billion cost to refurbish the warheads.[29] The B61-12 uses an internal guidance system and can glide to its target. The bomb has four selectable yields: 0.3; 5; 10; and 50 kilotons.[30] On 1 July 2015, the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) conducted the first of three flight tests of the B61-12 tail kit assembly.[31]

They've got a super bunker buster bomb that can probably take out any Iranian subterranean target.  Probably done to make a point after the talks, showing what will happen if Iran fails to keep their end of the deal.
