Just curious, what is the largest number of employees you've been responsible for and what percentage of the company was that?

Being responsible. The CEO has several layers under him to get the job done. If the company goes tits up, he leaves and is appointed to another job.
He is cushioned from the fuck up.

How many CEO's have lost their life savings because of their fuck ups?
Thousands of people worked their whole lives believing in THEIR company.
Next thing you know, everything is gone.
FUCK the CEO's and everyone else that takes the advantage of loyal
workers that  go to work everyday.
You will NEVER convince me that CEO deserves the money they get.

You will never be a CEO.

The grumbling about what others are being paid has been going on for millenia.

Matthew 20  New International Version (NIV)

The Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard
20 “For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard. 2 He agreed to pay them a denarius[a] for the day and sent them into his vineyard.

3 “About nine in the morning he went out and saw others standing in the marketplace doing nothing. 4 He told them, ‘You also go and work in my vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.’ 5 So they went.

“He went out again about noon and about three in the afternoon and did the same thing. 6 About five in the afternoon he went out and found still others standing around. He asked them, ‘Why have you been standing here all day long doing nothing?’

7 “‘Because no one has hired us,’ they answered.

“He said to them, ‘You also go and work in my vineyard.’

8 “When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired and going on to the first.’

9 “The workers who were hired about five in the afternoon came and each received a denarius. 10 So when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive more. But each one of them also received a denarius. 11 When they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner. 12 ‘These who were hired last worked only one hour,’ they said, ‘and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day.’

13 “But he answered one of them, ‘I am not being unfair to you, friend. Didn’t you agree to work for a denarius? 14 Take your pay and go. I want to give the one who was hired last the same as I gave you. 15 Don’t I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?’

16 “So the last will be first, and the first will be last.”

part of the problem is you agree to do a job for set pay.  then they keep adding stuff for you to do.  Some days I do 5-6 peoples job but I get paid less than just about all of them. People that brown nose and continuously screw the company by not doing shit seem to get the rewards of more pay, and sitting on their ass doing nothing or very little. Then when it comes time for a raise,, they make all kinds of excuses after they tell you what a great job you are doing.  It gets real old when its the same story every year. So keeping my out for a better opportunity.

Ive had employees since i was a young guy still going to school. I am a general manager under our company owner with about 30 employees. In all the years ive been doing this ive met very few employees that are capable of doing their job without oversight, let alone run a company.

Thats not a slight to them, im close to my guys but those arent skills that most possess. That's why it pays more than being a worker bee. Its so hard to find that even though i had skills in the field, i was pulled out of the field to be a manager at 19 bc my boss was desperate.

A good example is ordering parts. We do mechanical service and about once a day i have this coversation.

Employee.    "Did you order parts so i can finish that job?"
Me.       "No i need to have someone get the info from the unit when they go next so i can order it"
"Just order it, its the big king valve on the back of the compressor"
"You didnt give me compressor model, pipe size, valve part number, or even a picture. No info at all, how do i order it?"
"Just order it, its the big king valve on the back of the compressor"

Its always the same guy that says i just sit in the office and do nothing or the one that tells me i should do the job myself bc its hard. I always tell them ill go do the job myself, if i can fix it then they are terminated when i get back. No one ever takes me up on that offer.

And it happens.  Law and accounting are good examples - midsize firms think they'll attract better talent by raising their starting salary, but don't have the resources to propagate the percentage-wise increase up through their ranks.  Untrained newbies now come making the same money as people with 3 and 4 years of experience.  Mid-level workers leave because it drives home that the market can likely value them higher than where they are if less productive workers can make the same.  Firms then spend more money re-hiring the ranks they just lost.

Meritocracies work.  Don't know how we ever got off that message.

From your experience?  Please tell me your experience.

I am going to be real honest here: you are striking nerves.

You sound like every dumb shit technician/production worker I've ever worked with that "knows it all."  Do you want to know the difference between "being one of the guys" and being "the guy"?

"The guy" busts his ass day in and day out for the success of not just himself, but the entire company. He doesn't look at others with envy, he looks to others for inspiration. He is a leader that can make tough decisions, hire the right people, balance budgets and ensure success of his company.

"Being one of the guys" is easy.  You get home from your 9-5 and sit your ass down in front of the computer, crack open a Budweiser and call it good.  Executives don't have off time. CEOs often work 24/7, and of course they will share similarities with politicians.  They are the face of their company, the leader, and the rock.  Often times without them the company wouldn't exist.

Here's a story from my time at Georgia State University during the Occupy Wall Street Movement:

Everyday I walked to class and saw people bitching and complaining in tents in a park in the middle of the day.  I was a 19 year old kid.  I hated school.  It was boring and structured and not challenging.

Here I was working my ass off and still not feeling challenged.  I look down upon those that want an "easy life".  I want a challenging life, with goals and benchmarks.

I looked at these people not doing shit, but wanting to take from those that worked.  They held signs that said,  " We are the 99 percent"

No, you hippy, hairy bitch, you are the bottom 1 percent.

I would tell them to speak for themselves; be envious, complain about not having money, but not do shit to better your situation.

Want to know why NFL players make so much money?  Because they are in the top .0001% of the world in their abilities.

Want to know why you work production? Because you are a dime a fucking dozen.

But what do I know? I'm just a 25 year old college dropout...

Some people just need to be miserable. One of the employees that quit got a $9,000 raise as part of the first phase, which means he has more coming. He only makes $41,000 so was just told he's getting a $29,000 raise so quits? Fuck that useless piece of ungrateful shit.

Reminds me of when I was IBEW. Four or five coffee breaks a day, liquid lunches, didn't pay a penny for health insurance, unlimited paid sick days, unlimited overtime....and all the old guys did was complain they were getting fucked. "It ain't right what they're doing". Man did I get sick of hearing that. Day in and day out, "We're getting fucked" and "It ain't right what they're doing".

The company started offering retirement packages. Two years pay and two years added to their pension for retirement eligible techs to leave (80% were retirement eligible). They all responded with a nonstop flurry of, "We're getting fucked".

Then the company wanted to bring them all back as union-busters to break the union. They paid them $5,000 each with 20% pay raises to work on a week by week basis while they simultaneously collected their pensions (we also had 401k's along with pensions). Fuckers went from thug union guys to scabs in a heartbeat. You wanna know what they did all day? Cried, "We're getting fucked" and "It ain't right what they're doing",  They even went so far as to complain to the union because we wouldn't let them go to drinking at lunch.  Fuck that, I wouldn't let those "thugs turned scabs" do jack shit. They sabotaged everything they touched, I preferred letting them spend a loooong 8 hours sitting on their asses doing nothing.

Well, that's what this CEO is seeing. He offered a guy a $29,000 raise and all that guy does in return is whine, "I'm getting fucked".

How long have you worked at your job? How would you feel if some kid fresh out of high school starts on Monday and got the exact same wages, benefits and conditions you do?

Even assuming that was true and happened exactly as you suggest, how is the new guy getting the same benefits reducing or impacting your benefits at all? How long should said noob need to 'pay his dues' before you'd be happy?

Yeah, it sounds noble on the face.....but I'm not bringing expertise, skills, education and busting my ass for the same pay as the janitor.

I'm also not going to be making $70k after 10 years of getting there, when the kid next to me walks in the door and makes that.  He essentially got paid MORE than I did, because I had to work my way up, while he's getting $70k for all those 10 years of his service......vs 40K.  40k * 10 = 400K.  70K * 10 = 700k.  He is going to get paid almost double what I did for those 10 years.  That's fucked for me as the guy who worked there, gave the company my time.....and the newb gets a 300k raise?

Yeah, I'd be bitter.  That 300k would have been added to my retirement, invested.  Could have been $500k by the time I was done with it.  But the newb gets what I had to work for, for nothing.  And he gets to collect it, as a minimum, for a decade longer than I?

They'd have to compensate me for that, give me a raise to reflect my status above the newb, and we'd be good.  But I'm not going to manage people who make as much or more than I.

So in your opinion - because Henry Ford couldn't build a Model T from the ground up, he wasn't necessary to the company?

Just because all you see a CEO do is shake hands, that doesn't mean that's all there is to the job.

I guarantee Henry Ford's assistant didn't need to remind him of anything.

I don't understand why this is such a hard concept. Part of the reason why I left my firm and started my own is because there was a serious disconnect between performance (revenue generation and quality of work) and compensation. Even at the partner level, their formula was very attenuated in terms of rewarding performance. I was the highest-paid and highest-bonused associate, but it wasn't by a margin that reflected my performance. I left, took 85% of my work with me, and life is good now because I see direct consequences - positive and negative - for my performance.

Well, I can't be 12 because I have a 16 year old daughter.  We had a discussion with her that related to this topic when it came to the "birds and the bees".  Her mother and I  explained to her that at the end of her dates, most especially the first, she should have sex if her date so desired.  This would give them proper motivation to be a good boyfriend to her and certainly guarantee a lasting relationship.

Serioisly, give you his job.  Lol, Dude you probably couldn't even read a balance sheet and you think you could run a company?

Your description of a CEOs job is so laughably ignorant its outrageous.

Ask me how I know you have never had to b a leader and have no clue how demanding it is. I've never been a CEO but I have been a leader. I know what it's like to be responsible for the performanc e of a team. When I imagine what it takes to be a CEO and scale up that level of responsibility to something the size of a huge corporation the demands of the job seem staggering. They make so much because so few people are capable of doing the job and there is serious demand for people with those skills. You think some board of a major corporation is going to waste millions on some back slapper and hand shaker?

Have you ever actually *been* a CEO?  If not, then how can you possibly know what there is to the job?

Tell us more about how easy the job is.  And how easy replaceable CEO's are.

When you're ready, I can explain all the things the CEO does that you don't see while passing him in the hall.

Many CEOs don't have an ivy league education, either.  So tell us what it is that makes them so special they sit in that chair.

And by the way, don't envy the position too much; waking up at 3am to take a shit and feeling compelled to grab your phone and answer a few emails while sitting on the toilet isn't the easy, carefree life you've envisioned.

Actually no, it de-incentives productive behavior because you're going to get rewarded regardless. It's very bad for the company.

He is cushioned from the fuck up.

How many CEO's have lost their life savings because of their fuck ups?
Thousands of people worked their whole lives believing in THEIR company.
Next thing you know, everything is gone.

Just curious, what is the largest number of employees you've been responsible for and what percentage of the company was that?

I've said it all along. If you raise minimum wage to $15/hour or whatever, what about the people who already made $15/hour. They instantly get lumped in with people who made $6/hour less than they did and haven't worked to get there.

Always keep an out for a better opportunity but no matter where the boss is always an asshole, you'll never get paid enough, and you'll always have more work than you can handle.

We all have been there or are there, it sucks. But it is what it is. Not worth being upset over all day every day like some people.
