Recently I was able to get access to those big wooden spools that the electric companies use.I started turning them into shooting benches.

And with some paint..

that is really cool, wife has me searching all over for one of those spools for her goats to play on.  Tough to find around here.

Looks cool. Heavy, I bet.

They let those things go cheap or free? Always figured they reconditioned them like pallets.

FYI, if you don't cover/fill the holes up on the spools, you're likely to end up with wasp nests inside. Ask me how I know. I'd love to find one or two, its what I shot off of on the ranch as a kid but those are long gone and people treat the things like gold around here when I do find them.

That's very cool.  Now, if you could make the seat removable, you could put it on it's side and roll it to wherever you want it.

Ask a lineman if you know one. We have a hard time getting rid of them, unless we roll up old wire on them for the scrapyard.

Those holes on top strike me as hungry for brass and bi-pod legs. Other than that I think that's a nifty idea. .

I've never came across any spools made from treated lumber so you could probably save a few bucks on your builds by just using regular 2x4's. Unless maybe you had the treated handy. Cool idea.

Yeah when I picked the spools up,they already had yellow jackets in them.I Was actually thinking about putting a top on the next bench I make.So far I have not had any problems with them yet.And yes,if you know a lineman, they usually can get these for free( as I do).As somebody stated above,if you don't know anyone with access, they do go for a pretty penny.

Good use for them!  When I was a kid we had a pair in the basement.  Dad carpeted the base and spool with leftover shag carpet and put a laminate on top.  Cheap-ass tables.

At the rate I get them, I don't even bother painting them

I get 4-5 years out of them untreated.
