Interesting. My Dad worked for a major airline for 40+ years and I always heard "layover" used to refer to an overnight thing.

Nevertheless, good luck with whatever you decide. Seems like you should be fine.

How longs your layover?

Little over 2 hours.

Then you're talking stopover, not layover.

You should be fine. Just DON'T touch your luggage, Even if your connecting flight is cancelled, make the airline hold it and do without anything that's in it. Pack any essentials in your carry on.

Well no, it's definitely a layover by industry terminology, but I get your point. I travel with essentials anyways. Last time I had a cancelled flight I never touched my luggage anyways.

Regional terminology?
Generally a layover is under 4 hours or so. Though I don't see how 5 hours is really a break in the journey given how long security takes anymore.

It was so worth taking it in the ass on the machinegun deal though - i keep hearing this here.

I would not travel to NY with a firearm.

Assuming the state you're traveling through acknowledges FOPA.  From what I've seen states that hate the law always come up with reasons why it somehow didn't apply.

In theory, you are fine so long as the gun is legal where you are traveling to.

In practice, there is no way in hell I would risk it.

If it's only a layover I don't see the problem since the gun will remain cargo and won't be in your possession.

This, people have been screwed over a number of times.

Why does anyone want to spend money in NY anyways?

Two recent cases of out of staters caught with loaded handguns in NYC resulted in zero jail time and a fine.

Think of it as entering the former DDR with a firearm, legality doesn't  matter.

Here's an attorney who handles JFK and La Guardia gun arrests just in case. I know a guy who's the son of a federal marshal that got busted. He got off 10 grand short and lost his pistol.

There's no way in hell I'd take possession of my bags, but otherwise it should be a non-issue.

They come to your gate. Ask to speak to you, take you to a room where they have your luggage
Ask you if said luggage belongs to you, when you answer in the affirmative they open luggage and ask if firearm belongs to you. When you answer affirmative  they put you in cuffs, read you your rights and then charge you with possessing an illegal firearm in the City of New York. May be legal but you gonna pay to prove it. Then you're gonna fight to get your property back.

yup...I wouldn't do it even for an hour layover, it is just not worth the potential hassle and I am not sure why anyone in their right mind would go into NY/NJ (especially the NYC metro area) with a firearm...

over on the 1911 forums theres a thread started by a guy who recently flew out of LaGaurdia with a firearm...it was not a smooth process for him but turned out better for him than someone else since he appears to be LEO.

First of all - do you have a source for this, other than your assertion that it happens that way? I keep up with these things, and have never heard of this. I've flown through Chicago and Newark with handguns in checked bags without any issues.

Second - who the hell talks to police in NYC?

Of course but thinking that people get 7 years for it is laughable. Not to mention that you can't get sentenced to 7 years in Rikers for anything.

The correct plea when apprehended in possesion of an "illegal" gun in NYC is "attempted possession of a firearm in the third degree".
