New build and need a Windows OS.

I know that with W7, 8.0 and 8.1 there is a free upgrade to 10.

What OS would you get between Windows 7 and 8.1?

Any problems with the OEM version vs the full retail version?

Since 7 gets you a free upgrade to 10 when released, I'd go 7. I run 10 and love it.

I have two desktop computers at my house, one with W7 and one with W8.1.
I far and away prefer W8.1 but I'll be doing the W10 upgrade.

I have 8.1 on my laptop and desktop and have had no problems with it.  It doesn't seem like that big of a deal.

I use 8.1 under protest.

It's in my best interest to know 8.1, but I hate it all the same.

The main reason I use my surface tablet with 8.1 instead of my toshiba laptop with 7.0 is because 8.1 seems so much better. I can't figure out why people don't like it.

I was really tempted to put it on my toshiba but it's not worth spending money over.

I originally hated Win 8 with a passion.  It grew on me though, and 8.1 was a big improvement.  Still has it's annoyances where things were  easier to get to in Win 7, but overall I now kind of like it.

That's not to say I'm not looking forward to Win 10...

Actually, you can get to almost anything you want in W8.1 way way faster than with W7 (as long as you aren't running that stupid Classic Shell program) - that's one of the reasons I like W8.1 over W7.

I have 6 Windows 7 machines - 2 desktops, and four laptops.  I was frankly pretty attached to XP, and only moved once Microsoft stopped supporting it.

I'm very pleased with 7 - stable, mostly intuitive, not a lot of useless fluff.  I've got my machines dialed in the way I want.

Daughter has a Dell XPS 12 with 8.1.  Works well with the touchscreen.  But I think I prefer 7.

Bought windows 8 in 64 bit version. I FUCKING HATE IT. Probably the biggest waste of $100. Stick with 7. I've been meaning to see what's up with 10 for free but I'm not to savvy on how to change over an entire operations system without losing all of your shit.

None of them really since I like macs.  But if I *had* to pick a windows version I'd probably stay with 7.  Hold off on any upgrades until the bugs are gone

Using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS at the moment on this PC.

W7-32Pro on my laptop

W7-64 Home Premo on the current video game box

W7-64 Enterprise (its like Ultimate, but requires a corporate license server which updates the license every 90 days) video streamer box. (This is my emergency VPN into work box)

W7-64 Pro on the shop PC

W8.1-64 Home premo for the new game box build - just have case, O/S, power supply, Blu-ray burner, and some huge drives for backups.

W8.1-64 Pro on the i5 PC on my desk at the day job.

All said and done - What ever flavor you choose I prefer a "pro" version because I use remote desktop sooooooo much.

Have several other systems running Debian, but the question was RE W!nd0z.

I'm running 10 right now. Get 8.1 for now and download Classic Shell until 10 is available.

8.1 is the best OS as of now.

Those who say 7, are probably disgruntled that XP isn't supported anymore

No need to install classic shell on an 8.1 machine. 8.1 has a desktop for those who aren't using tablets.  Within about 10 minutes of farting around, you can navigate through 8.1 much faster than windows 7 and prior.

Yep!

I much prefer W8.1 over W7, and I don't even have a touch screen on my desktop.

I cannot fathom why people want to ruin it and slow it down with that Classic Shell thingy....

I prefer Win 7, but 8.1 has grown on me. I don't think its as bad as people say it is. "Oh Noes, it doesnt have the Start Button!!!". Not a big deal, still easy to navigate once you use it a little bit.

Win 10 will be released July 28th.

I'd go with Win 8.1 if you are buying before then. 8.1 is really stable and has a lot of great features.

Right now 8.1 w/ Start8 or Classic Shell on it.   It's a better OS than 7, but metro sucks. If 10 works out then it'll be the obvious upgrade from any of them.

Depends on what I was using it for.  For general use I'd go Win8.1 and Classic Shell.  And I'd upgrade to 10 when it was available...or maybe a few weeks after to see how badly MS is going to screw it up.  I'm an Insider, so I've been testing 10 since the early builds, and I think MS is going to get this one mostly right, but still, waiting a few weeks won't hurt you.

For a gaming platform I'd stick with Win7.  Games in 8.1 are faster, but I've had some compatibility issues and have gone back to 7 for my gaming. Also, if you're locked into legacy software or hardware that runs in 7, I'd make damn sure it will run in 8.1 and 10 before making the upgrade.

My desktop boots to 7, 8.1 and 10.  I'm going to keep the 7 install for gaming and the 8.1 install because I'm an IT guy and I have to keep up to date.  But I'm also advising my customers with 8.1 to upgrade to 10 a few weeks after release, or when I tell them to.

Win 7 for me - but I plan on moving to Win 10 when it releases.

I messed around with 8 and it was enough for me to know to skip it. The 8/8.1 evangelists will be along to tell you how to install classic shell or some such - but it still doesn't get you out of all the screwiness.

7 FTMFW

Having said that I went ahead and reserved my free version of 10 because I'm not paying for it. If I don't like it I'll go right back to 7.

This Windows 8.1 "evangelist" will tell you to use W8.1 as is - Classic Shell only fucks it up and makes it work worse than W7!
W8.1 works better than W7 out of the box!!!
