The processor (Intel inside, AMD, etc) is the processing power, how fast it does something.  Like a secretary who can type and file quickly

The hard drive is how big a file cabinet you have to keep your stuff in

RAM is how big the table is to spread the stuff out of your filing cabinet on and do things at the same time

I think a solid state drive simply replaces a hard drive with a chip.  Nothing moves, hence "solid state", and therefore nothing to break and die.

The lights indicate you have power, so your PSU may be good.

Any hard drive issues that you know of?

Actually I'm willing to bet his power supply died.  In cases were absolutely nothing happens when you hit the power button, that's what I try first.

If your MB is dead though, just pull out the drives and save them.  If you don't already have a USB/HD adapter, you should because they're cheap -

http://www.amazon.com/AGPtek®-Drive-Adapter-Converter-External/dp/B00BIE996S/

and it will make it really easy to copy all your porn important work files over to your new system.

Found a Toshiba 473914 on sale at Office Depot a couple of weeks ago. Between the sale price and the mail in rebates, I got it for about $150 off. I don't know if they are still running that sale, but if so, it would be well inside your price range and this model has a 17" screen. For my uses, I am quite pleased with it thus far.

I'm looking around at some on newegg, and I do like that some have a free upgrade to windows 10 when it comes out, however, in my price range, I'm gonna have to go with a regular HDD.  As ones with a decent GB SDD aren't going to have a great processor.  The dell that phurba recommended seems to be the best so far.  Only thing is it has win 7 I think, and a 1.7 ghz processor.

Is win 7 before that goofy ass desktop of win 8, I fucking hate win 8, the computer at work at the garage has it, and it drives me nuts.

Windows 7 is great and is getting difficult to find pre-installed on a new computer.
I bought a desktop at Best Buy earlier this week that still had Windows 7 Pro installed on it.
And there are some laptops out there that do still have it but no thanks to M$ and their strategy they are drying up fast.
Notice most businesses are STILL using 7 and are not going to 8 but are going to 10.
So one can live with it or upgrade to 10 or just buy a 7 and download it to your computer.

While researching this Win 8 issue last week I came across a tech article that was none to kind to the MS CEO that brought forth the program.
In fact the article stating that the CEO and all his crew that brought this OS to market were fired.
Obviously this thing was so disliked by the buying public it is rapidly heading to the ash heap of the world.

OP, I found a scanner link on crucial.com that will scan your computer and tell you what RAM and SSD upgrades will fit.
Im not sure if I really want to do anything with this one.
For what I use it for, it works fine.

Pro tip -

Buy a Dell Win8 system and you can install a Dell/OEM copy of Windows 7 on it - no serial/key or "activation" required.  Also works with HP, Gateway, and Sony.  You can easily find the correct version on any torrent site.

I thought that up twenty years ago trying to help some very savvy foremen in our shop how to understand the options when buying new computers.  Back when memory was $45/MB .  Just needed an analogy they were familiar with.  I think at the time the table was "how big a drawing you can spread out on the conference table".  Not much multi tasking on a Windows 3.11 486 machine.

That was me.  It's called the "Royalty BIOS" and your Windows license is actually on your motherboard.  If you use a copy of Dell Windows 7 (or HP, Sony, etc., on those machines) it will install just fine and won't ask for a serial or need activation.

You will need new device drivers (available at support.dell.com), and sometimes you run into problems.  For instance, last year I bought a Dell 15 laptop, and the only driver that wouldn't work is for Bluetooth.  So sometimes it's a little glitchy.  Of course I can always reload Win8 if I want to.

(ETA - I found the right driver on support.dell.com and now the bluetooth and card reader work just fine.)

Just search your favorite torrent site for "dell windows 7" and you'll find what you need.  Home, Pro, Ultimate - any version you want to use.  And since your license is on the MB and MS allows downgrading the OS as part of the EULA, it's not even piracy - it's perfectly legit.  Hell, you could even load Vista or XP on it if you really wanted to.

This is one of the best descriptions. I usually use the "filing cabinet and desktop surface" analogy to describe to people how memory works on a computer.

I also tell them that adding more RAM becomes useless when you go beyond what you use, but that if you have less than that, more RAM will help.

^^^This.

I love mine. I've owned a couple HPs and Dells in the past and all of them have had something break within the first year. Both Dell's had the hinges break, one HP had the processor go, the other needed the motherboard replaced twice, plus other problems.

I've had my Macbook Pro for 3 years now and it's been 100% flawless. Still runs like the day I bought it.

Yes. An Apple is going to use Samsung products, Intel, Nvidia, AMD, ASUS, Foxconn ect. Just like a $300 Dell or HP, or a high end part built gaming PC. But the build quality (especially for laptops), speed & features do vary. AMD CPUs are fine and are good enough for most people, but Intel is faster & more efficient. I recommend spending $1000 on a good laptop and those tend to come with Intel CPUs. I would also try and get a laptop with an SSD.

It isn't. CPUs use GHZ, but it varies from architecture to architecture. 1GHZ of a modern i7 is closer to about 5-6GHZ of an old Pentium 4. There are multiple generations of the i5/i7 line... to make it more confusing, the mobile CPUs have various speeds within the game generation. So you must research to ensure you get the higher end i5 of the current generation.

RAM is actually one of the parts you can skimp on. 8GB will be fine unless you need to run demanding development software. As you're been struggling with a 10 year old desktop and iphone, clearly you don't do anything intensive.

What you want:

- Quality built laptop.
- Intel i5 or i7 CPU.
- 8GB RAM
- An SSD

Bought a Sager laptop a couple months ago, extremely happy with it.
Model: NP9752-S
15.6" screen, and they start at around $1,700... so yeah, overkill for most people's budgets but if you want something 'good'... well "I" consider it good.
Processor: I7-4970 (3.6-4.0GHz)
16GB DDR3
GTX 970M (6GB GDDR5)
250GB SSD
1TB 7200RPM HDD

But if you're not doing anything intensive, i.e. gaming, rendering, etc...
I'd stick to ASUS as a brand if you want something for about 500-800$. I've had great experiences when it's come to customer service, even for when the damage was my fault.

Just last month I bought a HP spectre 360, it's faster than shit and has incredible battery life.  It replaced my ~2009 Sony laptop after months of having 3+ blue screens of death per day.  I hated the prospect of buying a new computer, but the sad truth was that I used it waaaaaaaaaay too much to just go from that to my wife's Ipad.  I tried to get by w/ just a tablet but was too used to a true computer.

Only advantage it has is the 500gb SSD.  The Lenovo has a bit faster processor, same RAM, and a bigger hard drive all be it a regular HDD, plus the small SSD, and it's factory new.....

Except IRL, the lenovo is junk compared to the dell.  Entry level consumer grade laptop vs mid level business grade laptop.  And the dell is factory reconditioned so that shouldn't be an issue.

Don't buy a fucking toshiba, at least the satellite models... mine lost its hard drive within a month. The fuckers wanted me to pay shipping (25.00 bucks) to send it back so they could look at it and determine if it qualified for warranty repair... Best part is I wanted to upgrade to an SSD drive, if they were to do it, first they would change the regular HD and send it back to me, then I would have to pay another 25 bucks to get it shipped back and pay for the new ssd..... WTF couldn't they have just changed it when I was going to ship it the first time to replace the hd..... I said fuck it and bought one at staples and changed it myself so no longer under warranty....

Wait... changing out the HDD shouldn't void your warranty... I mean many laptops are designed to allow access to the HDD without removing more than a single screw or two. I can see it if you had to take it apart to install a mSATA drive, but wow... That's insane

Well, came home today and found my old dell desktop dead and unresponsive.  After unplugging, opening it up, blowing the dust out, and trying CPR, its still dead.  Green light on the back, and a orange light inside, but no response from on off button.  Didnt have nothing really important on it, mainly stuff i can download again.  I have a ipad and phone, so interwebs is not going to be restricted.

Anyways, im looking for a decent laptop, good ram and memory, good graphics, 15 screen is best, more usb ports the better.  Built in wifi a must.  Also would like to find one that has word installed on it, as i kinda need it.  I havent bought a computer in 10 years probably so im behind times

First, do you really need a laptop?  If you don't actually need the mobility, then pass on the laptop.  I support all the systems at my company and laptops simply do not hold up as well over time as desktops do.  The incidence of mechanical failure in the components is considerably higher as compared to desktops, probably on the order of 100% higher, though I haven't formally measured it.

Don't let that scare you off of a laptop though if you really do need the mobility.  Keep in mind at our company we use them a lot harder and travel with them more than most consumers will, so they see more abuse, and that is definitely a factor.  Caveats aside, there are a lot of good laptops to pick from these days.  Few brands are actually awful these days, it's more about finding the best deal.  Some brands you pay a bit for the name stenciled on it.  This is kind of where Dell and Lenovo are at the moment.  I think Acer is one of the better deals going at the moment for mainstream or entry level systems.

When you say 'good graphics' do you mean "I want to watch movies on this" or do you mean "I want to play Skyrim".  Knowing the answer to that dictates the type of video card you'll want and will also generally dictate the price range you're going to be in.
