For the same reason the evening news is not delivered in ebonics. If a person speaks properly, it implies they are educated and know what the fuck they are saying.
Very fitting this subject is in GD, the land of constantly fucking up to/too, your/you're, their/there/they're and numerous other elementary school grammar rules. It proves the point speaking and writing like shit usually indicates a mind full of shit. The inverse is usually also true.

The REAL reason is that a research company working for an ad agency (can't remember who) did a huge multi-million dollar study with a large number of focus groups.

Conclusion: People with British accents had a higher degree of credibility and trustworthiness. Aussie accents had a higher degree of likeability.

That is why, starting in the mid 1990s, we suddently had a wave of commercial spokepersons in ads who were Brits or who had British or Australian accents.

Why does GEICO's gecko have a British accent? Because we are more likely to believe in a talking lizard if it has a British accent...
