20 or 30 years ago.

Maybe because everything's a crossover now or otherwise has similiar body style.

In the 80's, 70's cars looked really dated.

Likewise 80's cars in the 90's.

Past 10 or 15 years, if a car is well maintained and clean, most look like they're 3 or 4 years old instead of 10 or 12.

CAFE standards forcing most car designs to be more aerodynamic... So the overall shape doesn't change much.

I agree. My 2004 doesn't look nearly as dated in 2015 as a 1993 would in 2004.

I was born in the 40s and every year new cars had a different look. It was a big deal to see the 57 Chevy become a 58. A 57 T-bird become a 58. Aerodynamics was not a factor back then. STYLE was the big deal.

Today, aerodynamics rule car design. Mirrors, shapes of grills, tail lights, roof lines have a huge impact on MPG. You will never see a new car look like a 59 Caddy. It's too bad because all cars look pretty much the same.

I'd love to see a 1940 Ford coupe with modern suspension and runnig gear.

The Feds really screwed up car design.

Nissan seems to only change body styles every 5 years or so...and then they sometimes shift body styles to other models, like the 2004 Altima was the body of the 2002 Maxima, IIRC.

Its not just cars. Hairstyles, clothing and other things that I'm probably not thinking of really haven't changed much, except for the more extreme edges of society. If you watch a movie from 2005, or even 2000, you'll be hard pressed to tell the release date, as long as they didn't show something like a computer or cell phone.

Took a trip a few weeks ago on a motorcycle and couldn't help but notice how ugly the rear ends on most are..some are so hideous I don't see how any designer thought "oh, that looks good!"..just a roundish blob shape with tail lights somewhere in there

90's body styles were the absolute worst. 80's were pretty bad too. 60's are kick ass. Early 70's too. That said, the mechanical dependability and longevity of today's cars are so far ahead of those years it unreal.

I notice even the most standard economy models now come pretty well "loaded" with air, power everything, sound system, carpeting etc. compared to the past when the base model was truly that and you could easily double the price by checking off the long list of options.

Cars with clean, mature, and refined lines tend to stand up to the test of time.  Very trendy designs date themselves quickly.  That is why I choose European makes more often than not.  My test is, what will I think of that car in a year or two?  There are some models that you think are cool but realize that after a year or two, you're simply going to despise it.  The Challenger and Camaro are good examples.  I can't stand the sight of those cars now. Plenty of others I can't think of off the top of my head.

Most models seem to run a ~6 year interval for generations with a ~3yr mid-cycle refresh.

The more utilitarian vehicles go even longer.

If you look at any given time in automotive history, the majority of the vehicles being sold in a given year look very similar to each other.

In the '70s, they looked like big boxes.
In the '80s, they looked like electric shavers.
In the '90s, they looked melted.
In the '00s, cars started moving more towards a bubble shape, and in the last few years, more and more designs are adding sharp, chiseled lines.

Yes, I agree newer model cars look better longer when maintained.
I have a 2011 Optima and many people I know ask me when I am going on my cruise.

They ask this because the local dealership was giving away cruises with the purchase of a new optima earlier this year.

I don't fully agree but it's not a drastic departure either.

I guess new cars are adding straight lines and flat surfaces to distinguish themselves from how they have all looked the past 15 years. I do like my 9 year old daily driver still looking modern though.

That's because Nissan was planning to kill production of the Titan and sell rebadged Dodges around 2009-2010. Chrysler going to Fiat killed that plan. Nissan kept the Titan alive and began development of the second generation truck that comes out in the 2016 MY.
