Came to suggest this, every good Marine should always have his note taking gear with him at all times or else Chesty Puller will rise from the grave to haze you to death.

rite in the rain, black memo pad

It has graph paper. Combined with a Fisher space pen you are all set.

Flexible, too. I carry one all day every day for work.

With these rite in the rain pads is the backing sufficient to not have to place it on something solid while writing?

They are little flexible, but you can write in them without backing.

I've taken some kydex or any thin plastic will do, and glued it to the back before.

Check out their official website. They have all sorts of options, they may even have a hardback edition that size. I just opted for the flexible one because it lives in the back pocket opposite my wallet.

If it's basic notes, a smart phone works pretty well.

Leuchtturm1917 Jottbook.  $3.95 each and they hold up really well in the pocket.  I carry one of these every day at work.  Other brands don't hold up nearly as well, and I've used Moleskine, Field Notes, and various no-names.

I am a bit behind with an older smart phone and this is still the way to go.

I have all sorts of useful stuff saved in it, HVAC filter sizes, car filters, wipers etc.

Green Notebook

Even though I don't work daily in the field anymore I still use these.  Cheap and more pages than those dinky field notes pads.

You'll love how they write; smooth and bold color

You'll regret ever getting them the moment it starts raining and your notebook gets wet.
