14 years ago today, at about 8:30pm I was sitting on the couch with my 2 year old son.  My 5 month old daughter was asleep on the other side of the room.  As I leaned over and turned on a lamp at the end of the couch, the spark at the plug lit off a propane leak that was leaking under the crawl space without my knowing.

I had 3rd degree burns on 18% of my body.  My son and I made it out of the house, but as I ran back in for my daughter I fell on the stairs as I jumped down (we were living in a basement apartment) because the flames were covering the steps and I didn't see where to land.  My son Ben was burned on 35% of his little body, but by the time they were done harvesting skin for his grafts, he has almost no area on his body to this day that is not covered in scar tissue.

My daughter and I also made it back out, she was burned on 25% of her tiny little 5-month body with 3rd degree burns.  She is also heavily scarred today, but still manages to be a beautiful young girl.

Happy anniversary!  Go have a BBQ for us!

The pics of the kids are simply heartbreaking, so I just posted the pic of the fat guy- me.

I've seen SCW in person now a few times, and he looks better in the picture in the OP!

Can't believe they made it out, but I'm glad they did.  Good dude for sure.

In our Winter Precision Rifle Course, his grafts were separating off his fingers because the skin doesn't give like normal skin on a hand, since it was sourced from somewhere else on his body.  Dude is hard as woodpecker lips.

I really am at a loss for words.

Glad you did what ever you could to save your kids. Just know, whatever problems or issues this may have caused you in your current life, you saved the kids and yourself.  You proved what a caring and loving parent you are, and you risked your life for your childrens sake.  Unfortunately,  a lot of parents aren't as loving and caring, as you were that day.

I'm at our homeschool science fair, so my replies will be intermittent, but here's a pic from a post I made in the fitness forum when I ripped my callus off doing dead lifts a week ago.

This was my first callus in 14 years, after about 12 days in a coma they started to wake me up, and a few days later I remember the nurse sliding a pair of tweezers under the skin on my palm and lifting all of the palm and fingers off at once.  I was a farmer/carpenter at the time, so I had tough hands, which was what saved them.

Since that day I can't really build a callus as the grafted portions typically tear/break down or otherwise  give trouble long before the palms get conditioned enough to build a callus.  Barbells seem to build the callus without tearing the graft though.

I'll try to get another pic later.  We've got our share of gory stories from this too, and I've got some really funny stories about the halicinations I had in the hospital.  Drugs are bad, mmmk?

Me too.  My family history is Scotland and Sweden, so it's not like I've ever had a tan I could t wash off at the end of the day.  I carry lots of sunscreen now.

Fuck yeah man.
You are a good person and a better father.
I have encountered enough people standing outside burning buildings telling me a friend or family was in the house.
Never have I witnessed a save by a family member.
I am glad you and your children are well.
I will never forget your story.
