My family had two when I was a kid. The first one was a duckling my dad found just walking down the road near the house while we were in the backyard. Since it was Independence Day, we called it Firequacker. I can't remember what happened to it, I think it flew off. A few months later, Dad comes home with another one that of course we called Firequacker II. It was attacked by the neighbors retrievers when it got out of the fence and died.

Can't link directly to the thread as it's in a restricted area of that forum, but here's the cut and paste version. Sorry for leaving them cold bu that's a crap ton of links to put in individually.
" Here are my general reasons for preferring ducks, followed by links to information. 1. Generally healthier, more resistant to parasites. 2. Better at foraging and keeping pests down. 3. Will not scratch and uproot plants. 4. Better eggs: larger, less water content, thicker shell, keeps longer. 5. Easier to contain and herd. 6. Quieter, especially if keeping a male for breeding." http://www.backyardpoultrymag.com/2-5/dave_holderread/ http://albc-usa.etapwss.com/images/uploads/docs/pickaduck.pdf http://www.hgtvgardens.com/ducks-and-geese/raising-ducks-or-chickens http://www.hgtvgardens.com/ducks-and-geese/raising-ducks-a-primer-on-duck-housing-diet-and-health http://www.bigpictureagriculture.com/2012/03/six-duck-breeds-for-your-small-farm.html http://www.hobbyfarms.com/livestock-and-pets/raising-ducks-26820.aspx http://journeytoforever.org/farm_poultry.html http://www.ansi.okstate.edu/breeds/poultry/ducks/ http://www.ansi.okstate.edu/outreach-extension/poultry http://pods.dasnr.okstate.edu/docushare/dsweb/View/Collection-306 http://pods.dasnr.okstate.edu/docushare/dsweb/Get/Document-2111/ANSI-8204web.pdf http://www.farmbiosecurity.com.au/livestock/ducks/manual-duck-production-biosecurity/ http://www.cpdosrbng.kar.nic.in/DUCK%20FARMING%20GUIDE.pdf http://www.duckhealth.com/housmngt.html http://www.duckhealth.com/ducknutr.html http://www.duckhealth.com/duckhlth.html http://www.duckhealth.com/foodvalu.html http://www.duckhealth.com/hatcduck.html http://www.thepoultrysite.com/articles/557/managing-ducks-for-egg-production http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/agriculture/livestock/poultry/species/duck-raising/egg-production http://www.countryfarm-lifestyles.com/raising-ducks.html http://fresh-eggs-daily.com/ http://www.examiner.com/article/what-do-pet-ducks-and-geese-need-for-winter http://www.backyardchickens.com/t/55358/duck-houses |

Easier is debatable, ducks don't scratch up your garden and are generally healthier for example. And good laying breed ducks will match laying hens. Neither is right or wrong, they're both good choices. |

Mallards are very sweet and grow into beautiful birds.
If you get one as a chick be prepared for it to try following you everywhere though. |

I had Rouen ducks, they were great View Quote Yep, basically fat mallards. I had one, Elmer (named by old girlfriend) who used to ride around in my Jeep CJ with me. I remember pulling up to an old, obviously intoxicated man at a stop light with the doors off and the duck in the passenger seat. Old man glanced over at us, Elmer turned and looked back at him, old guy looked straight ahead, shook his head, and then squalled tires turning right. Had two more a couple of years later, Marty and Jerry. Get them when they're tiny, and they think you're the momma duck. They shit everywhere, but they like to be within eyesight of you. Take them for walks in the park, and watch for dogs. When they get fully grown and you get tired of cleaning up duck shit, toss them out on the nearest lake in a nearby park. |

LOL a story my dad told me today
He used to work at AT&T as head of building maint. or something like that. He got a call one day about the Canadian geese shitting all over the parking lot. My dad kind of chuckled at the caller, but the caller said "You don't understand, I'm in a wheelchair and I get shit all over my wheels and hands coming in from my car to the office" My dad said he understood, and put in an order to a goose removal company. I like to only run brood lights and do two a day checks on my brooding boxes once per year. Edit- head shot! Did you recover the bullet? I've recovered two 9mm 124 grain HSTs that have threw and threw a possum. Set the trap on top of a bag of sand with a rash bag covering the sand bag. Then the blood doesn't soak the sand. Then just dig a few inches into the sand and pull the bullet. Tape the sand bag back up to shoot the next possum on. Toss the bloody trash bag. |

I acquired a few ducks last year. They were real friendly and would allow you to walk right up to them. Once they reached full size, I decided I would eat all of them. Pretty tasty but I will stick with my meat birds in future. No real reason why but I prefer a good Cornish cross to a duck.
Best of luck OP. |

Very cool. Are they Pekings? View Quote Yes. I'm amazed at how fast they grew. They held the yellow duck fuzz until they were maybe 4 lbs. It was funny seeing a big duck still in duckling fuzz. They are big and lazy now. They don't make much noise for the moment. Only when I go out there and get close to them. |

Nice pekin. We also bought four pekin and also two chicken. Unfortunately one of our pekin ducks is attacking one of our chicken so she may soon become duck dinner.
Have you figured out which ones are drakes? The drakes have a weak quack and a curled tail feather. |
