He had to have been an awesome guy to get that kind of send off.

Yes

The dude was a piece of work, built awesome hot rods and almost got fired once for getting a BJ in the line truck and leaving the radio on so he'd get cred. Claimed it was all a mistake. And his ex wife shot his truck once. Fuck yes. Huge drunk fest at the Legion tonight, I am a victim. Glad to have tomorrow off.

Go have fun and celebrate! I would want to be remembered that way!

My bad Mauser, I didn't mean to come off that way.

Also check out Operators Choice from AWS. A few bucks cheaper and it's supposed to be really, really good.

So someone school me on welders.

I want to try and make a roof rack, I figure I'll have to use 12-16 gauge steel bar...Whats the cheapest most effective welder I could use?

Cas may chime in and tell me FOAD for this , but honestly I would go to harbor freight and get a cheapo welder from there to get started with. You can always upgrade when the time comes.

When I worked there the few items that didn't come back as not holding up/working were welders and we sold a fair bit of them at the store i worked at.

Eta: we have a millermatic 211mig that runs with gas c02/argon and a monkey could use it and get decent welds. It costs about the same as a middle of the road AR. You set it to the thickness of material and it makes all the adjustments for you. I taught myself on a small 120 mig, the gas is key to having good clean welds and maybe an angle grinder

No, Harbor Freight will be fine for what you need.
I would go for a MIG machine that is capable of using flux core wire.
You won't need any gas for that and will be easier to learn than stick welding.

I however believe in buy once cry once and would recomend a machine from Miller, preferably one that can be used for MIG.
If you get one that is gas powered it can also double as a generator.

Before you weld up your rack I would recomend practicing on some scrap that is the same thickness as what you intend to make your rack out of so you don't screw up your rack by burning through your material or laying weak welds by being too cold.

His only problem would be the gas, I don't know the area he's in and how difficult it would be to get bottles and resupply them, it also wouldn't make much sense for him to rent  bottles when he only plans to do small projects like the rack.
if he uses flux core while slightly harder to learn he wouldn't have to worry about bottle storage or waiting on his supplier to bring more bottles.

Yeah, that could be a problem, we have an unlimited supply at work. Not really sure about the cost of gas either. I don't have alot of welding knowledge, just experience from work. I actually hate welding, but somehow managed to become the go to guy for welding on my shift, which is scary come to think about it

No problems on finding gas around here, plenty of welding supply shops. Harbor freight sells the 20 Cubic Ft. Argon Gas Cylinder  for about $90.
I say go for it Smiley.
