Did the kid come over and talk after the wreck, sounds like he screwed the pooch going into turn one. At least you know the new car is better then the old one, I wanna say it is f@st, but I can't. Sorry to hear that Vrm.
Not to derail, but I just did the Rusty Wallace driving experience this morning. 10 laps around the Milwaukee Mile by myself in a last generation Nationwide car (mine was a HMS chassis). I paid for the video, but mine was corrupt and didn't work. I averaged 80mph over 10 laps (one mile track with 4deg banking with a spotter). I haven't had that much fun in a car since the first time I had sex in one. Now get your car back on the track so we can continue to live vicariously through you. |

I'm constantly tightening the torque arm on my car at the drag strip, lock tight doesn't even matter. I'm thinking about drilling holes in the nuts for safety wire but don't know if that's a good idea or not. This I can offer an actually engineering opinion on I am assuming this is a nut on a threaded shaft. If so, drilling holes for the lockwire is fine, but I would recommend replacing the nut with one predrilled. If we are talking about a bolt head, I would also recommend predrilled, but a pre drilled socket headed cap screw predrilled is better, the metal isn't removed from the actual load bearing part of bolt head. 0.032 wire should be fine for any vehicle application, just make sure it is on correctly so that it actually pulls the nut or bolt head tight, ie if the nut were to loosen, it will pull on the lock wire, not push against it. And the loop goes around the flats of the nut, not over the top. Let me offer you a thought on Loctite though. make sure the threads of the nut and the bolt are clean. Over clean them and let them dry. Consider using the Loctite primer that goes with the metal you are putting it one. And use fresh Loctite, not a bottle that has been in the tool box in the heat for 3 years. And make sure the coverage is per the Loctite directions. and let it dry and cure. IIRC, Loctite recommends 24 hours for some applications. Loctite that isn't dry isn't going to help anything. ANd chose the right grade, but don't go overboard on a fastener you want to get back apart. Permanent Loctite isn't actually going to hold the nut any better than properly applied removable Loctite properly applied with the bold torgued to spec. Primer is essential for stainless steel; don't ask me how I know. VRM already looks like he has welding under control. I only try to give welders help in procedure development and qualification. Or if they aren't following their weld procedure and/or the drawing. |

Excellent advice Dad
That bolt that runs horizontally is supposed to be free, not tight. I can adjust the pull bar side to side for track conditions. I'm allowed one inch off center of the rear end though. |

Pre drilled are readily available from most aircraft supply shops and save headache/frustration/broken bits. Just an example here: http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/hapages/drillnutsnas509.php There are also safety wire washers but if you're vibrating that bad I'd stick with the drilled nuts http://pitposse.com/sawiwa.html |
