kids have no feel for the road at that point, anyway
saw somewhere a study on eye fixation between new drivers and seasoned drivers that showed the kids looking no more than a few car lengths ahead most times, while everybody else was staring down what was coming up |

Also seems to me that a common theme was severe over correction once the saw they were headed for trouble. That is, by far, worse than the distracted driving. There are tons of things that can happen out on the roads that requires quick movement, and if you do not know how to not over correct, you are screwed.

One time I was waiting at a stoplight behind a guy who had his nose buried in his cell phone. He was first in line and I was second. I honestly don't know what prompted me to do this, but I shook my head and punched my horn. I guess he thought I was indicating to him that the light had turned green. Without even looking he pulled forward about 15 feet before he noticed that the light was still red.

I see a bunch of spoiled brats with fancy newer cars and all sorts of gadgets to play with.
Back in my day I had to keep both hands on the wheel and stay alert because the steering on my 20 year old worn out truck would wander on its own and you never knew what direction you would go if you had to stomp on the brakes hard. I was happy to have tires that stayed inflated and an AM radio with a single speaker that made enough noise I could hear it over the rusted out exhaust. And we didn't have all these safety features like air bags and seatbelts and floorboards you cant fall through. If you wanted to live it took work and you had to pay attention to stay between the ditches. |
