It can't be good but how bad can it be? It's clearly another tax that's not called a tax. I'm aware of some of the implications but I'm left wondering how bad it will be once their foot is in the door and time goes on. How will it affect Americans down the road?

We'll be like Iran or Afghanistan which is exactly what Obama wants. |

Higher prices for consumer.
Less choice for consumer. Less innovation by private sector. Exemptions for political support. Government kill switch when you will actually need information. Regulation of free speech via electronic communication. |

My end result will be that I'll cut the shit off and actually go outside.
I'm already paying $47 a month for ATT's shitty service. |

And it will take a few years for the clamp-downs come.

Look at how the FCC regulates radio and television today.
Here's an example of how the FCC regulates television. Janet Jackson Halftime Show "Nipplegate" The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) fined CBS a record US$550,000 which was fought in the Supreme Court,[4] but that fine was appealed and ultimately voided by the Third Circuit Court of Appeals in a 2011 ruling, and a case to reinstate the fine was refused in 2012. View Quote The increased regulation of broadcasting raised concerns regarding censorship and free speech in the United States,[12] and the FCC increased the fine per indecency violation from US$27,500 to US$325,000 shortly after the event. I'm afraid you're right, even if it takes decades to get these regulations in place. We will look back on how things are today and recall the "wild west days" of the internet. |

In about 10 years like this:
China censorship sweep deletes more than 60,000 Internet accounts BEIJING (Reuters) - Some of China's largest Internet companies deleted more than 60,000 online accounts because their names did not conform to regulations due to take effect on Sunday, the top Internet regulator said. Alibaba Group Holding Ltd, Tencent Holdings Ltd, Baidu Inc, Sina Corp affiliate Weibo Corp and other companies deleted the accounts in a cull aimed at "rectifying" online names, the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) said. The reasons for their removal included accusations of being misleading, rumor mongering, links to terrorism, or involving violence, pornography and other violations, the CAC said in a statement on its website late on Thursday. The purge is notable as a step toward China's government locking down control over people's internet account names, an effort which censors have struggled with in the past, despite numerous efforts to introduce controls. These failed attempts have included trying to force users to register for online services using their real names. The new regulations, which take on effect March 1 and will also target real-name registration, were issued by the CAC, which was formed last year and given power over all online content, something previously divided between various state ministries. https://ca.news.yahoo.com/china-censorship-sweep-deletes-more-60-000-internet-113610173.html |

Obama is a piece of shit and I hope he chokes to death on a bag of dicks. I am now going to send an encrypted email to a friend, using a secure email service based in Switzerland. My blog site only talks about different ways the government is disrupting individual rights and I don't ever have to talk about the good these same actions/agencies/policies do. I sometimes post technical tips on how to stymie or bypass those disruptions. I am working on interviewing a man whose company is proposing a hardware-based "personal internet among friends" that will cut the government entirely out of our data sharing.
Today, none of the above would be removed by a censor, get me fined, or warrant (pardon the pun) a visit from police. In five or ten years...? |

Some things ISP's have already done: - Crippled Netflix and other streaming services to pimp their own streaming services - DNS hijacking to steer traffic to advertisers - Replacing web page ads with their own Just because it hasn't happened yet doesn't mean it won't. We're talking about multi-billion dollar media conglomerates with a captive audience of millions. You can stretch your lobbying dollars quite a bit by censoring bad news about your preferred candidates. |

For the most potentially accurate/extreme answeres, ask any of the conspiracy theorists. I had a guy tell me almost 7 years ago this would happen. He said it ultimately leads to gov control over what you can see/learn on the Internet. Easier to control the masses when they don't know anything.

Anyone else remember how "healthcare reform" was needed so "the government can put insurance companies in their place"?
Then we get Obamacare, which benefitted both the government and the insurance companies, at our expense? Yeah, that is exactly what is happening with the internet right now. |
