Rewatching all the seasons I didn't remember it being as provocative when I saw them growing up. There's a couple where they bring in very western ideals, and I almost kind of gagged when they push the capitalism on other cultures in the show. Not that I'm against capitalism, but America does it to an unhealthy level, which also showed through in some of the episodes, drippingly so. Otherwise I like the show a lot. How does America push capitalism to an unhealthy level? We are more socialist than we are capitalist. The government has their hand in literally everything form the soaps we use to the way we light our houses. From the time we get up in the morning we are under government control. From the light we turn on that uses a government approved switch and light bulb, to the government approved toilet we shit in. We then get in a shower with a government approved shower head and use water heated by a government approved water heater. We then use that government approved shower head to lather up government approved soap. We then dry ourselves using cotton towels that were made using government approved bleaching and dying processes and cotton grown in government approved way. There was one episode in TOS that really strike me today. It's the one where they land on some Fantasy Island type planet where everyone's deams comes true. Captain Kirk gets to beat up his academy bully, and something about tigers and Samurai too. Lt. Sulu's dream was to find a Colt .38 revolver for his collection. When are you going to see THAT these days?
The show was produced back before those gun control ninnies started turning everyone into sissies. |
