I'm guessing you've never had a 200 pound plus halibut thrashing around in a boat where you're trying to stand...have you?  I've been halibut fishing several times, and anything over 50 or so pounds always gets the .410 snake charmer treatment before coming aboard.  Some of them even cause problems after they've been shot.

Maybe you shouldn't attempt to harvest fish you are not man enough to handle....

Stick to smaller fish that you don't need to execute

FWIW, when looking for fish, you *normally* find them in a pond, not a pasture.

The last thing you want on your boat is a green halibut.  They can trash all your gear in short order, especially a big halibut. Cobia are just as bad, if you can't shoot them at least brain them with a ball bat or something similar. I have a video someplace I shot of a boat captain shooting my buddy's 260 pound halibut, 2 shots from her .38 special before they brought it onboard then two deckhands beating the hell out of it until it stopped moving.

This might be the fish I was thinking about, size sounds right.

If you can't take the fish sportingly.....

Don't take it into the boat......

You must have missed the part where I said the guide took the decision out of the fisherman's hands. That, and if you're going to kill it anyway, why not kill it fast? I'd imagine small fish like walleye suffer a bit on a stringer before they die. Once the fish is in a position where shooting it would be legal, if it's big enough to be safer to shoot than boat it alive, why not shoot it? It's pretty sporting bringing the fish to that point.

ETA-It would also be more "sporting" to run through the woods naked with a spear and persistence hunt a whitetail, but guess what? My state doesn't allow such activity. They do, however allow me to attach a chair to a tree and sit in it, waiting for a deer to come alone, and when it does, shoot it with a .45-70 handgun.

Those snake charmers / H&R survival 410/45 combos are incredibly popular up here.  Pretty much everyone carries one for big fish.

Yeah I have.  It's a challenge.  It's what makes fishing "sporting"

You gun nuts want to re-enact JAWS and stuff a propane tank into some little snapper's jaws and shoot it with a 30-06 API round  "hurrr we needs a bigger boat hold muh burr"

Not me. Maybe I just haven't hit my thumb hard enough, but every time a catfish has jabbed me, it hurt worse for more time than the hammer hit.

Either way, if the fish is big enough, and in a position where legal to do so, I'm shooting it before going hands-on if I'm not releasing it.

Damn good point. You get it.

I have spent a large chunk of my life fishing saltwater, catching damn near everything, from Australia to Costa Rica, and not once has a firearm been produced to land one, and my family is no stranger to firearms.

Yeah, i guess it would be easier to blast every fish that comes boat side, but I have to say, the thought never once crossed my mind.

Too each their own though.

This thread keeps going so I'll add some.

So it looks like shooting big halibut is common place. But the fish they caught was 25lbs max...I've caught fish way bigger than that in a fucking kayak. I just put my hands in their gills and grab them. Even in a boat when dealing with big fish up to and including tuna, use a gaff. Never felt the need to shoot a fish.

Obligatory fish pics. Use to fish 5 days a week, my username is fishing related, grew up a quarter mile from the ocean. The kilchers are just incompetent as fuck.

Yeah, i guess it would be easier to blast every fish that comes boat side, but I have to say, the thought never once crossed my mind.

Too each their own though.

If i wanted a Skin mount I'd boat it. Its only 50 bucks for a tarpon tag. It's not like they're a threatened species. They're just a giant herring and nearly as plentiful as them.

No.   It's snowing out CT right now and I just finished doing some snow removal.  Inside taking a Phb1gt right now

It's just funny how everyone just yells "dan" at anyone from CT, I know Dan and he's busy making a fuck ton of money, hardly has time for this.  Hell I coldn't get him to come play with machine guns last week.

Well, aside from the trolling, he rarely uses punctuation, like Dan/MaxHardCore.

TBH I never had a problem with him; I tend to like people who flout the rules.

So this thread is about weather or not its ok to shoot a fish before you bring it on the boat?

I'm not a fisher but it makes sense with the larger ones, just be careful you don't shoot the boat I guess.
