The post-war American tanks as panzers in Patton ruined it as a candidate for "best." Good movie, sure, not best. You have to at least attempt to get the details right. View Quote It really doesn't matter. It was a story about the man. The tanks were on screen for maybe 5 min total. |

It is the most realistic war film ever made I think, AND it is based on a true story. It will put you right in the middle of ww2 like you were there. Seriously, get the whole set of DVD's or watch online. The whole series is worth watching more than once! |

Band of Brothers if a mini series is allowed.
Honorable mention since it hasn't been posted yet. Siege at Firebase Gloria. |

Surprised no one has mentioned THE FIGHTING 69th.
But Band of Brothers is without a doubt the best war film ever made. |

Band of Brothers
Red Dawn Hamburger Hill Pork Chop Hill Blackhawk Down Apocalypse Now Could Children of Men be considered a war movie? Possibly. SPR used to be up there for me, but the sentimentality and soaring string music detracts from it more every time I watch it. I have mixed feelings on Platoon - decent movie, but my uncle who fought there said he felt betrayed by how it portrayed American soldiers and he hated it, and now I can't watch it without thinking about his comments. |

View Quote Most of the "correct" equipment you see in modern WWII films are either from reenactor groups which made their own mock-ups (cold war era Russian tanks welded up to look like tigers, surplus modified Czech half-tracks) or computer animated, neither which were available in the 60's. Just like if you wanted an ME109 in a scene it was most likely going to be a P51 repainted. The millionaire restorations of 2 originals outside museums were not available nor was computer animation. Though there was some post war Spanish copies of ME109's and HE111's available for the 60's movie "Battle of Britain"...that was about as good as it got then. |

Master and Commander.
1. It is difficult to do that type of film for logistical reasons and yet they pulled it off flawlessly. 2. Great acting. 3. Awesome script and man the team work it highlight of an experience crew of professional sailors going up against an equally experienced crew of professional sailors one on one, nation vs. nation...this ship is BRITAIN! 4. Had excellent lessons regarding the leadership of men and what it means to be a part of something greater than yourself. Love that movie. |

Platoon has always been my number one followed by Hamburger Hill
|
|
The Train - while it's not a traditional war movie and fictional, it's an excellent movie throughout
|
|
Add to the list...The Sand Pebbles.
Especially noted as McQueen insisted on correctness in weapons handling and other details. |
