Toshiba Tecra R850 laptop.  Two years old and has gotten slower by the day.  I now live in Pop-up city. (just saw the Bud ad....Jesus those people can put out some great stuff).
So I added 4 GB to my RAM to make a total of 8.  Seemed a fair gamble for $40.  Did nothing.  In fact less than nothing.  The POS seems to be slower than ever.

Is there a fairly simple solution?  I'm at the limit of my expertise adding the 4 GB.  Dial up was faster than this shit!

You should ask in the Urban Commandos forum

They helped me quite a bit.

You mention pop ups. You have adware. Throwing ram at it won't make the adware go away

I had similar problems, and was able to fix them with advice from this thread:

AdwCleaner gave me the best results.

Do you have the recovery discs?  Back up your important data and reinstall the OS from scratch.

You should burn your computer and never buy another.

Unplug your modem and router for a few minutes then plug them back in.
See if that does anything.

Wipe and re-install OS, run updates, download Chrome and add ADblock plus, Ghostery and HTTPS Everywhere......problem solved.

When you added the ram did you go into the BIOS and make sure the computer recognized it?

Also get a program to search for adware or spyware. I use superantispyware, but others mentioned are good.

If you are using IE stop and start using Firefox or Chrome.
