I've owned something like 6-7 Toyota trucks, and up until lately I thought they could do no wrong. Yesterday my brother was at the Toyota service department and sent me a picture of newer body style Tacoma partially disassembled (getting a new frame). I didn't know the newer ones had the same frame problem as the previous generation (95-04). I started doing a little digging on Google. There a bunch of horror stories about this frame debacle. Right now I'd be leery of Toyota steel. With that said, if I saw evidence that insured that this problem is a thing of the past I'd buy Toyota. But then the problem was supposedly fixed on the last generation (05-14) that are seeing frame replacements now.

Well, it is a UAW vehicle and build quality is directly related to how drunk/hungover/high the workers are that day. You really don't want one built the day after St. Patrick's Day, Super Bowl, etc. |

It's time for a bit of truth, although most here won't like it. In the end, after you get over brand loyalty, either one will last a while with proper maintenance. I see a lot of people here on the gm bashwagon. Most of them probably bought the worst examples of reliability or a first year vehicle and had a few problems. I've seen plenty of late model as well as older gm vehicles go to 250,000 miles and beyond. I had a pickup with over 280,000 miles before a bearing went bad. I admittedly was young and didn't perform proper maintenance. I'd be wary of the Colorado since it's just been released.

Look at what a 2010 Colorado and what a 2010 Tacoma are worth today. This. Deduct the difference, add it to the cost of the Chevy. Still worth it? That's money you're giving away. Don't forget to subtract the $5k rebate that was likely on the Colorado back in 2010. That's easy to forget about when comparing resale values and should certainly be a part of the calculation. |

I don't know. I have TRD and it's been a maintenance nightmare.
At 90K I put new brake pads on it. Didn't really have to...probably 15K left on the original pads but I had it on the lift so screw it. Same for plugs. Replaced those at 88K . The original ones were still fine but I felt weird going 100K on original plugs. Other than that I change the oil every 5-8K with Mobil one. That's it. 108K on it now and it drives like new. It's painful driving a truck that all you do is get in and turn the key. I love to tinker and work on vehicles. I should have bought the Chevy so I could do major repairs every once in a while. |

GM 305hp 18/26 mpg 100k mile powertrain warranty Toyota 236hp 17/21 mpg 60k mile powertrain warranty The toyota will have a stronger resale, but it doesn't mean shit when you're pissing that money away in fuel and maintenance, the toyota has a higher cost of ownership. The resale value is also trending down and it's sales for 2014 were lower, that's going to lower resale and when the new model comes out it will lower the resale of the old ones. The GM truck will also have a much better transmission and up to date interior tech, 8" screen, wifi, and safety. If you buy the Toyota you will be paying top dollar for old outdated technology, there's a reason they're redesigning the truck with more power, better fuel economy, and technology. View Quote Where do I begin..... Never known anyone actually need a powertrain warranty on a Tacoma. I personally have needed a powertrain warranty on a GM truck. Yes American trucks look great new, but they just don't wear as well as a Toyota. Tacoma reliability is "legendary" for a reason, it's not just fanboi BS. The Chevy S10 / Colorado doesn't have a Fanboi club or great resale value, FOR A REASON. Purchase price, Colorados don't seem any cheaper than Tacomas, wrong there. At the end of the day the new Colorado is the latest version of what has been historically one of GM's most troublesome vehicles, the S10 / Sonoma / Blazer. It's rare for a car model to go from giant POS to awesome. Conversely most of the class leading vehicles today have been class leading vehicles for the last 20 years. You really need to look at resale values of Tacomas vs. Colorados, then minus 1 mpg. I think you will find your math is off. Tacoma maintenance isn't bad, oil, axle fluid and sparkplugs. Another erroneous statement. The new model 2005 + Tacoma has done little to lower the value of the 2004 and older model Tacomas, so that's an erroneous statement also. Current Tacoma also has about an 8in screen and bluetooth, etc with Intune audio package. I see a pattern emerging here. According to NHSTA safety ratings: Tacoma has overall 4 stars http://www.safercar.gov/Vehicle+Shoppers/5-Star+Safety+Ratings/2011-Newer+Vehicles/Vehicle-Detail?vehicleId=8154 Colorado is not yet rated http://www.safercar.gov/Vehicle+Shoppers/5-Star+Safety+Ratings/2011-Newer+Vehicles/Vehicle-Detail?vehicleId=9499 Outdated technology.......the 4.0 V6 and the 5pd Auto are old yes. But they work and work and work. New designs just don't offer the time tested reliability and longevity that the older designs have demonstrated. That's the driving design ethos behind this vehicle, reliability, longevity, off-road capability. Buying and selling cars every few years is, (after strip clubs and divorces) the dumbest thing you can do with your money. The design ethos and time tested ability of the Tacoma, allows you to be smart with your money and keep a vehicle a very long time. |
