That's right about when submarines started using diesel engines. Gasoline and kerosene engines were still in use on some boats.

Apparantly that class was shut down in 1915, so it was probably an older motor.

It looks like more than one class of boat in the film but I can't identify which classes are represented.

All well and good, but seeing them drag the nose cone of the projo over the knife edge of the hatch gave me a physical reaction.  So did rolling the powder cans along the deck (pier?) while clearing debris and shit out of the way.

Those look like base fused armor piercing capped projectiles. The nose is a stout hollow steel windscreen.
