I think they might use the torture detachment from the 5th Cohort to make their point.

Not too high. After the first one had their head caved in by a sword, or was pierced by a spear, the rest would scatter quickly.

Did the Romans ever face modern firearms? I'd have to guess they may have second thoughts if they hadn't and thier men started falling/bleeding from "magic wands" before getting into striking distance with their swords and clubs.

If I had my AR and 10 loaded mags I think I would still run away from a platoon sized unit of Legionaries. Those dudes were hard core. |

They'd encircle the town. Drive the protesters into a kill zone. Those left alive would be crucified on telephone, power or light poles.
Mind you, once those with firearms start using them, they could panic the legionnaires. |

View Quote What percentage of the rioters would be armed with more than a Jennings .25 cal? It would be mostly hand to hand---and I said an ENTIRE LEGION to deal with the rioters. If the Romans were given intelligence that Al Sharpton and Rev Jessie were the ringleaders---would they single them out for special treatment? A triumph maybe? |

What would the body count be?
The exact number of bodies would be dependent on the number of protesters present when the legion arrived on the scene. |
|
A phalanx of Spartans or a Legion of Romans, either would be effective.
Forget any weapons disparity for the moment. The sheer sight and sound, would be very effective at crowd control. |

A Roman Legion Is Time Transported To Deal With Ferguson Riots View Quote I love this idea. |
|
When quelling riots Romans would prefer staves over swords. They had a few ways of dealing with protestors. Either they walked right in and started cracking heads or they'd have soldiers dress as civilians, mingle in and then on signal crack some heads.
Sulla quelled potential rioting by telling residents that if one thing was thrown at he or his men, he'd fire their tenement apartments. Showing an equal lack of restraint, modern police would be exponentially more effective. Rifles and pistols beat cudgels and swords. |

Indeed, nothing wrong with our cops but we live in a modern society with all of the benefits. I'm glad of that. Our cops have the guts and ability to solve shit but we have laws and I'm glad we do. One thing with my scenario--how would be keep the Romans from raping and pillaging once the riot was put down? |

They would flee in terror and confusion at the sight of the modern world.

Dreams will be dreams. Of course a Roman Legion would decimate protestors. Tactics, strategy and brutality would overcome the ridiculous fools throwing bottles, bricks and cracking a couple rounds from their hi-point 9mm. The issue is whether Legion or not they would be a government entity being controlled by government trolls who don't want to offend. They would be ordered to back off and stand down just like police and national guard. Dreams will be dreams.
Unleash modern forces in play in these riots and protestors and rioters lose big. But then the politicians lose big. It isn't about having a bad ass unit come in and deal severe punishment. It's about politicians kissing ass and not doing what needs to be done in order to save their own bacon. And, it can be done with in the law. |

I am sure that even in a shitass ghetto like Ferguson there are a significant number of semi auto weapons and high capacity magazines. Even shotguns.
The only question is do they have the ammo and can they get their act together to provide a good coordinated defense. |
|
1000 to 1500 men ... a short blade is no defense against a Glock .40.

The first volley of spears and the protestors would turn tail and be run down from behind and slaughtered by the cavalry then mopped up by the infantry. More like 5800 men. |

They would win, it would be over rather quick. Rioters - all dead Romans - 10 dead |
|
Hmm... Against modern weapons.. Catapults would probably be used. Explaining to the Commander that Archers should be taken out of Auxiliaries and used front line and out of sight for barrage would certainly help.

Will they have twitter, the media, and outside agitators? View Quote ferguson would be cordoned off and power cut, cell towers down in preparation. The legion would be given a three day weekend to do the job. They would be promised and shown the gold and hookers they would receive as pay. They would be intrigued by the shaved coochies |

I would also bet that the average American, even in the 'hood, would be at least a foot taller than the average Roman soldier. It would like the Romans would be going up against giants.
