I have no practical need for NV.  I don't currently hunt, I don't "operate", I don't patrol a ranch...nothing.  But I do have a really nice PVS-14.

It's fun as hell, plus one day there might be an actual SHTF type of situation where it comes in handy.  Yeah, that's it, it's an investment in prepping...that's how I justify it in my head.  Really though, it's not much different from certain rifles that I have the same amount of money invested in and mostly sit in the safe until I feel like shooting them just for fun.  I postponed some gun buys and got the PVS instead, don't really regret it.

The goal is to have one by the end of this year. After playing with a PVS14 and PEQ15 in the Army I am convinced. The ability to walk in darkness and navigate over terrain, once mastered, is a pretty good skill to have. The ability to make solid hits on targets out to 4 or 500m in total darkness is even better.

I already have an SBR and suppressor, so NVD is the next logical step. Just need to figure out if I want to cheap out on a helmet or spend big money for a ballistic helmet, find my spare rhino mount and j arm, and do more research on IR light sources. I'm leaning towards one of those civilian PEQ15s.

Only have one PVS14, need to get a 2nd for a dual tube set up, than thermal. Of course I have about 75% of my salary as disposable income.

I bought my first AR in 1992.  Today, that AR (if it wasn't a ball of melted rubble) would still be as effective as it was.  It holds its own against current rifles.
I can afford $1000 for something that holds value like that.

I remember paying almost $4000 for a 200Mhz Pentium computer in 1995.  MMX, baby!  Even had this new thing, called a SoundBlaster!
It literally isn't worth anything...even if I still had it.

I don't have the income to justify that kind of expenditure, for an item that is guaranteed to be worthless.

I would love to have NV...but it's just not within my range.  It is literally throw-away money, and $3K - $4K is too much for me to do that at my income.

If I had that kind of coin in one rifle, there would be no way to avoid an anvil falling out of the blue sky and squashing it. Then I would cry like Boehner.

That $500 one seems about my speed, if it is any good.

The above contains pictures comparing SPARK to Gen III and explains the practical differences.

I will summarize on the SPARK before I go to work.  It is the only Gen I I know of that is actually useable.  If you have $500 and CAN NOT get anymore to put towards NV go ahead.  It has it's uses and will be fore more useful than a fourth type of pistol siting in your closets or 3 more inches of flat screen TV hanging on your wall.  If you have a regular income and can squirrel it away until you ca afford GEN III, do that.

A PVS14 can be had for $1800-2000, not much these days

He'll NV is about the same price as two months of Obamacare

See I was afraid of a review like this. Good enough to get the job done but if you're able to save for '14s, you'll be much happier.

Also, FREE has an excellent point: The second you get NV, you're gonna want a fk'n IR laser, and that's another ~$1300.

I would research this myself, but by the time I know the answer... this thread will be about screen doors, trannies, pandas, or some shit.

Is there any use for NV on a home defense rifle?

A corollary question:

Doesn't bright light blur out a NV image... like an intruder's flashlight, or flipping on a light switch?
