Full-strength Simple Green. Works great on dirty, grimy stocks, too, especially if you warm up the stock first with a hair dryer.

Full strength?  I thought you were supposed to dilute it.

I honestly can't recall ever using it diluted, it works so well right out of the jug. I doubt it would be as fast as anything like mineral spirits, etc., but for what it is, it works well. When I do a stock, I hose it down with SG, scrub it with a toothbrush, and when it's done, I rinse as much as I can off with water, and wipe dry.

I used to get it in the spray bottles (which I assume is pre-diluted, but don't recall), but IIRC, it works out a bit cheaper in the end if you buy it by the gallon.

I made a oven out of heating duct and a few 100w bulbs, and for the extra heavy coated ones I have an attachment to put a hair dryer or heat gun in.
I keep it at a slight angle and it drips into a catch pan.

Then scrub it down with mineral sprits or simple green.

Cookie sheet wrapped in foil, multiple paper towels placed on top, small parts placed on towels.
The whole thing placed in the oven on 200F for an hour.
Take the parts out and spray off with wd-40, and wipe dry.

You can put the whole stock in the oven too, just wrap it in towels. It will stick out, so you have to flip it around once halfway, and you will lose some heat.
I think you need to sweat the cosmo out of the wood, not just wipe it off the surface.

Too much over thinking, contraptions, and chemicals for a simple job.

hot soapy water. People tend to overthink this.

Yep, hot as in can barely stick your hands in it.  Shrimp cookin hot, with tide detergent of old.  Then after the clensing scrub while the steel is still hot  apply a good gun oil  to the warm steel for best results.

Can you soak the metal parts too long in the mineral spirits?
View Quote

I dunno. It only takes two or three days to soften it up enough that it comes off very easily. You can do it sooner, or without soaking at all, but soaking first makes the job much easier.

The longest I've done it is four days, but that was only because it took me a couple of days longer than planned to get back to it. I can't really think of a reason to soak it longer than that. If you think you won't have time to get back to it for a while, you might want to just put it off until you do.

I've experimented with several things and the best I've found is spray on brake cleaner.  It blasts cosmo out of cracks and crevices.  I don't use it on wood though.

Depends on the amount of items.  If it's a few rifles nothing beats the coin operated car wash.

I guess I'm gonna go with the mineral spirits.  Am I ring to assume I can just let it air dry and the mineral spirits will evaporate?  I mean I don't have to wash the mineral spirits off the metal, right?  Just let it dry and then lube it up?

I soak the metal parts in mineral spirits and scrub with a toothbrush and use compressed air for nooks and crannies. For stocks I like to use heat.

No, stripped stocks look like shit. I like that nice patina that took 50-100 years to get that way. Let it sit in the sun on a hot day or two, wiping with a rag every couple hours.

One final question about mineral spirits.  Does it put out combustible fumes?  If I soak parts in my garage all night, there's no chance of those fumes igniting is there?
