I have a 1999 Trans-Am 30th anniversary edition convertible.   Fun car!   Do it!

Did I mention I'm the original owner and the car has 4,100 miles?   It's a safe queen

The interior on those things was fucking hideous.

Formula was lighter than the T/A.

They are fun cars. LS series motors have endless aftermarket parts and make more power every time you look at em wrong.  Manual or auto? Go to LS1tech.com and kiss your life savings away

Build quality is pretty bad on those cars.  The unibody is about as stiff as a rubber band.

They can be good cars with some work.  I would spend more and get a low mileage one since most of these cars have probably had the piss beat out of them.

Or just spend a few thousand more and get a C5 Corvette.. they solve many of the f-body issues out of the box.

don't get the 99....get a 01 or 02

there are "differences"

eta: since there are some tard haters in here....

lower miles are better, the LS motor is a top notch platform to upgrade and a very easy motor to mod, the 4l60 is a weak link if its auto, and the clutch will need an upgrade if its a stick

pull the pan if you can and that will tell you alot about that motor with that many miles

texas speed, thunder racing, and norris motorsports will be places you spend alot of money at

suspension, bolt ons, gears/axle, transmission, motor......in that order

Link Posted: 12/8/2014 11:27:23 PM EDT
[#12]
I autocross a 99 Z/28. The 4th-gen F-body is a great engine and trans in a pretty mediocre chassis. That said, the suspension is about as good as it gets for a vehicle with a solid rear axle--unequal length control arms in front, torque arm in back.

If you want a car with enough torque to spin the tires at will and put a silly grin on your face, go for it. If you want a modern, sophisticated vehicle, run away.

One with that mileage ask the owner if the oil pump has been replaced.
If not you might want to if you buy it.
Ask me how I know.

An 03-04 cobra, C6 or C7 vette, SRT challenger etc would be viable options for him to suggest to replace a 4th gen Fbody, but a Nissan Maxima?

they are fun.

not very fast by todays standards if stock. they rattle. The door handles break. they are a royal bitch of a pain in the ass to work on under the hood. Interior parts are cheaply made... they break and squeak.

all that said though; there is something to be said for the f-body cars that holds your attention.  I'm a big fan of the ws-6 cars myself but they are either way more than the price you're looking at or so beat that you wouldn't want one.

Those cobra's are quick. Change a pulley and or head unit and they are fast. But most likely ubable to find in the 7k range.

Mmm, yes, that 6 cylinder screaming in protest at a constant RPM while torque steering in the "4 door sports car" is the absolute definition of invigorating.

Yup.   03-04 Cobras still demand 17-22k depending on condition and mods.

A h/c/i improved 5.0 with a blower and some suspension mods would be a better bargin.    Also 4.6 3v 05-08 Mustangs are coming way down in price due to the Coyote 11-14s plus the new 15s.

Love Firebirds, I have owned many of them over the years.  The late fourth gen LS engine cars are great and decent fuel economy (my 6 spd Collectors Edition got 26-28 miles to the gallon between OKC and Dallas)
