Just heard this on the radio. Targeting APD headquarters. I-35 shut down.

There's a large APD station near me. I heard a LOT of sirens leaving there about 3 hours ago. Figured a wreck on 35.

Must have been for this though.

According to APD's twitter account, no officers or innocents were injured, suspect was shot and his condition is unknown at the moment.

According to the link, he's dead. Sounds like when the officers discovered he was weraing what might be an IED vest they pulled back and waited for the bomb squad to show up.

The gunman was shot by a police officer in front of the police headquarters, Assistant Police Chief Raul Munguia told reporters.

"An officer outside the building saw the suspect, fired at the suspect, the suspect went down," he said.

The suspect had fired about 100 rounds at buildings in the downtown area and had shot out windows at the police facility, which was evacuated, KLBJ radio reports.

Munguia told reporters that the suspected shooter, who was wearing "some type of vest," was shot near his vehicle, which appeared to contain an improvised explosive device.

After dragging the downed suspect across the street, officers "backed away" until the nature of his vest could be determined. The police bomb squad was on the scene.

Officers were also investigating an address in North Austin where the suspect lived. They said they are checking the residence for any other potential bombs.

Jesse Van Wallene, 29, told NBC News he found himself around 15 feet away from the shooter when he stopped at a red light and spotted him with a "large gun in his hand."

"He was in full gear so he didn't seem like a civilian, but there was no writing on any of the equipment," the restaurant server said. "It seemed like he was wearing a bullet-proof vest and he was wearing a helmet with a clear visor over his face."

Van Wallene said the gunman started shooting at a building opposite the police headquarters. "He was firing in bursts of about five shots," he recalled. "He didn't even seem to acknowledge we were there, he just seemed very focused on firing at the building, which had no lights on inside. The girl in my car said, 'Go, let's get out of here.' We ran the red light."
