Hi--first post. I recently put together a AR-15 and my plan is to only have one, I mostly hunt with and own a number of leverguns, but felt the need to own a AR-15. So I have two questions: 1). How many magazines do I really need? 2). How many 30-rnd and how many 20-rnd mags? if this question has been asked before I apologize in advance...I also want to thank you for your time and input... View Quote I have no idea and I also have no idea how many mags I have |

I think I'm about 40 or so gi mags and another 30 more pmags. I'll pick up M&P mags when I can find a good deal. I'm at 10 or 15 mags for the 10/22. As little as I shoot if I have to replace one a month I'm good for most of the rest of my life. I'm buying reloading supplies now.

Gotta love it when the ammo in the mag costs 5x what the mag costs. If you think the HK91 is unpleasant to shoot, you should try a G3 sometime. I have both a collapsible and full stocks. I did one burst with the collapsible stock (which is curved the wrong way) and I've never used it since. |

Quoted: I have no idea and I also have no idea how many mags I have View Quote I'm glad that I'm not the only one who has no idea how many I have. I couldn't even guess as there are so many. I've been amassing magazines since I started collecting guns in the 80's and picked up lots of spare mags here and there. Back then I had a 6 mags per gun rule. When the 94 mag ban happened, I upped it to that to a 10 mag minimum. For really cheap mags like AR-15 and HK-91, I'm stocking up. Same with Suomi drums as they are very cheap... too cheap to pass up. |

In this thread we see people who are ready for the next panic/ban versus those who will likely be bitching about the high cost of mags and those hording them/gouging.

I read some will buy a mag and a box of ammo every paycheck. That is good to stock up over time, but don't pass up on sales!
I need more mags. |

View Quote Back in the day, I used to order a case of Q3131A, and 5 new in wrap USGI mags from Ammoman ...EVERY paycheck. (Sometimes it was 7.62x39 or 7.62x51 ammo...but ALWAYS with the 5 magazines). |

See, this makes sense! It's those guys who have all those magazines and more, but, only have a couple hundred rounds of ammo that are... |

A couple 20's and 10 or 12 30 rounders is nice. More is fine too.
I'm a gun nut from back before "the ban". Only have one AR now. Been through really bad financial times for the last couple years, sold off rifles, ammo, and mags but I'm back now. I plan on acquiring a mag or three here and there. <EVIL LAUGH> Mag prices are awesome right now. Ammo compared to back then is pretty sad though. Even in the early/mid 2000's I remember getting WIN white box 9mm 100 round boxes at Walmart for $9.99. |

Then again, if the SHTF I'll need more so I'll get more before that happens. It's not just about wearing them out, it's about what happens if you need more at once... or lose some... or suddenly find you need to help set someone up with a new rifle, and no mags are available through normal channels. I think I have something like 20+ per rifle. 10 per is a reasonable amount, but factor in more if you have dependents. |

5-7 per
precision rigs that need 10 or20 rounders 5 is good |

Enough to fill every single one of those bitches up with ammo. I still need quite a few magazines, my ammo spending spree became stupid last year.

For a new shooter a couple mags is fine.
For home defense you might want to keep a couple loaded For tin foil hat wearers you can never half enough, maybe a few hundred will suffice. |

It's interesting how much things change.
I'm in the "buy all the magazines" camp, but many of the gun owners I grew up around probably had 2-3 magazines for each magazine fed rifle/pistol and thought that was more than sufficient. Not saying they're right, but seeing the reactions to the one guy who said that's what he had was amusing. |

I have literally walked by an entire box of 30 rd mags at gun shows and asked, "how much for the entire box?" and bought the ENTIRE box on more than one occasion! You can never have enough. I use them as gifts! ETA: you will rarely if ever see a 30 rounder in my rifle though. I much prefer to use 20 rounders. View Quote No kidding, I once made the "mistake" of buying a couple of 20 rd clear Lancers. I still stock up on the standard capacity 30 rd mags, and recently bought Magpul 40 rd magazines; but for day-to-day range use the 20 round Lancers are my go to magazines. |

Damn DSG. Just ordered another 10 pmags. So cheap. Probably have around 100 mags now for 4 ARs.

In our current political climate, I say minimum 20 per lower. You should be stockpiling cheap lowers, too.
