Something like a suede chukka boot would work well for your situation. Not the old, tan "crepe sole" hippie shoes, but an updated style with a more tapered toe and better sole materials. For examples, look at the J Crew boots. Not because they are great, but because they have a bunch of models all in one place. John Varvatos also has several stylish chukkas. You don't have to buy a $400.00 pair, but you can get an idea of what gives them a modern look. Otherwise you may end up looking like an out of place college professor. They are comfortable, fine with jeans and a shirt, but still work well with sweater or jacket. If you want something dressier, you could get a smooth leather.
For convenience, I picked out a link from Bloomingdales. It's not any type of endorsement, just an easy to access picture/description of the idea. |

I wear the canvas Sperry Topsiders. Very comfortable, and not too fancy, and not too expensive either.

I like my US-made LL Bean/Chippewa Katahdin Iron Works boots. I have both the non-insulated and insulated models. Good 6" boots that are passable with khaki pants if needed. I know jack shit about style, though.

I'm going to find a nice pair like that with a thicker sole and a harder toe hopefully. I work about 3-4 miles from a mall with LLbean, nordstroms, eddie bauer, clarkes etc, so I should be set. Watch me leave with nothing though. That mall has been overran by foreigners to the point that it doesn't seem like you are in america. Anyway a lot of good options from everyone, thanks . |

I like Merrell's casual shoes. I currently wear a pair of World Legends.

Look at Olukai shoes. They're based out of Hawaii, and make comfortable footwear

Sperrys, Sebagos, Rockports, old-school sneakers like Chucks, Pumas, Adidas, P.F. Flyers, or New Balances, Clark desert boots. Lots of choices.

You could try a Palladium "pataugas" style canvas boot. They're what I usually wear with jeans when I'm not wearing sneakers. http://i747.photobucket.com/albums/xx116/MVolkJ1975/Indochine/pataugas.jpg As far as boots go, they're very comfortable, and Palladium also makes them in a variety of "non-military" colors. I'm good with OD, but you can get black/brown/red/etc. View Quote I washed my OD's ones and they are some sort of mint green nowI dont really like them with jeans though, cargo shorts yeah perfect....jeans not so much |

Dunham Highland Park. Made by New Balance, available in wide widths if needed, and easily polished. I've had 2 pairs and they hold up well for years with daily wear. My local New Balance store has them in stock.

I wear Rockports or western boots with jeans for caual when I'm not wearing sneakers.

Ecco Seattle Apron Toe Oxfords
These are my daily. Very comfortable. |

Chukkas or even a wingtip styled boot. Most of the other suggestions here are something I'd expect my mother to buy on the discount rack for my father to wear.
