I remember the plastic costumes and shitty masks that all us kids had in the '80s.  I also remember one kid I was in school with, doing some gnarly jumps and kicks, while in his shitty plastic superhero costume, and splitting it open right on the ass.

We made fun of him relentlessly until he cried.  Kids are cruel.

On one occasion I had a sheet thrown on me and I was a "ghost."

Unfortunately it was going to be used as a sheet in the future so no eye holes were made.

I really did go bump in the night.

Thanks Mom.

Trick-or-Treating for the season ended at 8:00 tonight.

Without question Zombies were THE thing to go dressed up as.  Many girls, especially the youngest, wore their Princess costumes to night.  A couple of their big sisters went as Zombie Princesses.

One boy dressed up as a toy soldier, Light Green makeup included.

Otherwise THE biggest single costume for boys was Batman.

Truth.

Even as a kid it never made sense to me that a Superman costume had a picture of him on the front. It'd be just as easy to put the S emblem on it and make it look halfway legit.

Even in the 80's as a kid, I thought the costumes that required an explanation of what they were plastered on the front to be sorta lame.

Doesn't the Frankenstein mask he's wearing already give away the fact that he's dressed as Frankenstein?

Nope!  Gotta put a picture a Frankenstein on the shirt and then a caption below that in case you really couldn't figure it out.

Pro tip:  Little kids don't care.  They know they are getting to dress up in something similar to their hero, or something they recognize and their peers recognize, and then they get to run around and get candy.

Why adults get worked up enough about it to even mock it, as that site seems to be doing, is beyond me.

Lighten up Francis.  Other than being click-bait, I'm pretty sure this is what you call a "nostalgia" article.  The current prime target audience on the internet grew up in the 80's and 90's.

All my shitty plastic costumes had to be two sizes too big so they would fit over the snow suit I had to wear to trick or treat in WI.
Or you could be cool and get frostbite.

What about CHiPs?

Also, where I grew up you ended up with a winter coat over the top of it too, trick or treating in the rain and possibly snow.

I had an awesome Batman costume one year.

No Batman on the front, just the proper symbol (longsleeve shirt, iirc), and a custom Batman mask and cape sewn by my mom.

Got great entertainment out of the mask for the next couple of years, because it would make my cat freak the fuck out.
