Watched that movie "John Wick" and it had some great action scenes. I noticed the main character using some Center Axis Relock shooting techniques and it's peaked my curiosity. I've heard of it before and seen it with the video game "Splinter Cell," but I've never taken it seriously at all.
Has anyone here taken a Center Axis Relock course? If so, what was your opinion of it and did you take anything useful away from it? I don't think I'd adopt every aspect of the doctrine, but was wondering whether a few things they teach might be useful. Here is one of the scenes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnPagmeLm-g |

this is the first time I've heard of "center axis relock" shooting.....
|
|
I can understand why from a retention aspect it might make sense in certain situations but that shit just looks retarded.
|
|
I don't get using your non-dominant eye to shoot with. That part doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I am interested in some of the close retention shooting positions though, but not sure they're worth much yet with as little knowledge as I have on it.
|
|
Hmmmmm.....never heard of it.....doesnt mean it doesnt make sense.
Good flick by the way. |

*piqued And man, those CG muzzle flashes look horrible. Did they get the Walking Dead SFX guys to do it? Should have gotten Freddie Wong to help out. |

I don't see how shooting with non-dominant eye under stress is practical ... But that is just my $0.02
|
|
I saw it yesterday.
Typically videogame superhero stuff. Very meh.

It does not look like he is spending a lot of time on target identification / confirmation before shooting, but perhaps it is just a movie and not to be taken realistically.

I got smoked on a two player arcade console by a buddy that took the course. (shrugs)
He liked it. I saw it as a good way to get slide kissed in my teeth. EDIT: I didn't know Paul Castle had died. No point in speaking ill of the dead. |

I took a class that my work sent me to that was billed as a "CQB" class. It ended up being a C.A.R. class. I hated it and really didn't take anything away from it. 95% of the shooting during the class was from less than 5 yards (WAY LESS) and the longest was I believe 10 or 15 yards. In my opinion, you can shoot any technique you want from that distance and get good hits fast.

Center axis relock is purely idiotic, but it looks cool to people I guess.

I've done enough research into CAR to know it isn't for me (or humans in general)

I've long wondered what the soup sandwich shooting technique that the fellow who brought the FN 5.7 to take my CCW class was called.
I've taught hundreds of CCW classes, and this guy came in already an "expert." Bad-mouthed my technique in my own class, giving me "suggestions" on my stance, grip, etc. Very much "that guy." Well, we come to the range portion of the class, and buddy pulls out his 5.7, takes his target, and he's such an expert that I figured I'd just tell him how many rounds he needs to put in the practice and test target, and we'd be good to go. I could focus on my other students, a mixed bag of blue-haired old ladies, younger couples, and the like, all shooting my .22 pistols. As I walk down the line, I see ol boy about whack himself in his shooting glasses with the slide shooting like the videos. Stop and watch him for a bit, and at 7 yards, my class "expert" is all over the fucking place. The 70 year old women in class are turning in softball sized groups in the center of the target and this guy has holes on every edge of the 24X45 inch B-27 target. He had to re-take the test after I unfucked his technique while the rest of the class waited, and that shamed him into shooting like a normal human being. He also ran out of 5.7 ammo so had to use a .22 target pistol. |

Looks like more tactical-ninja cool kid wannabe stuff, but I'm sure it's a useful technique to have in the toolbox. I came to post this. It's just another tool for the toolbox. Paul Castle is the man that came up with CAR. Here's his bio from his company: "Paul Castle was born in Ramsgate, England on January 14, 1959. He joined the Kent Police Force at the age of 18 and served in a variety of capacities including Detective and Training Officer. After his retirement from the Police Force, he moved to the United States to begin his new career as a Tactical Trainer. His many accomplishments with Sabre TTRR, the company he founded, are both impressive and extensive. During the last several years of his life, Paul dealt with cancer but continued to provide his high standard of training. Paul actually missed the airing of an A&E documentary on his training due to being in the hospital for surgery. Paul ultimately lost his battle with cancer on September 14, 2011. Paul Castle was an incredibly unique individual - He is sorely missed. Combining his extensive training and experience with firearms Paul developed the Center Axis Relock (CAR) Shooting System. His dedication and passion for teaching the CAR System was based on his unwavering belief that the System could help save lives. Considering there are documented cases where Police Officers involved in shootings believe the CAR System contributed to their survival, Paul’s belief seems justified. Paul’s legacy, The CAR Shooting System will live on." |

ETA After rereading that, I thought I should say, that wasn't directed at anyone or meant to be demeaning, but it sure looks that way. lol It's just a technique that may or maynot be useful at some point, but it definitely isn't from Cory and Erika. |

It started showing up around 05', and like any cool new dance move, some of the kids just had to proclaim it as the "next new best technique". Some good points, some bad, depending on when and how utilized, like everything else. It has been largely ignored for a reason though, and not because it looks 'Tarded. |

I don't get it. Is this CAR technique something you practice just in case you ever get in a shootout inside a phone booth? Assuming phone booths are still a thing.

I hate the phrase "it's another tool for the tool box" and it's variations, just because I got so sick and tired of hearing it and it still makes me cringe.
