If I can catch it soon enough then I will take a few of whatever OTC pain killer is available. Start drinking water and eat something. Then I will take a hot shower and then go to bed in a pitch black room with a fan on. I have recently thrown some Dipenhydramine to help me fall asleep and that has been very helpful. Much better than writhing in pain until I pass out.
If I am at work or cannot do the above, then it all goes to hell and I am in pain for 4 or 5 hours. Fortunately I have never had them last more than 5 hours. Granted those 5 hours are more painful than anything else I have experienced. I have figured out that one of my triggers in Mt.Dew from an aluminum can. I can drink any other dew from a can and be fine. I can drink regular dew from anything else but a can and be fine. And other caffeinated beverages don't to squat. Bright, quickly flashing, concentrated light in the dark also does it. My migraines always occur in what feels like the area right behind the top of my eye. I have found that putting pressure on the top part of my eyeball alleviates the pain momentarily. I even managed to kill a migraine ONCE by doing that. Corey Taylor of Slipknot says it best in the first sentence of "Duality" - " I push my fingers into my eyes, it's the only thing that slowly stops the ache...." |

I usually only get one or two a year. Well I've had my pair in the last month. Most recently, it was this week. I spent the day hugging a toilet bowl and dry heaving stomach acid just to get the boat to stop rocking. Then when trying to sleep I woke up several times to piercing pain in my skull that felt like someone stabbed me with an ice pick. Problem is, I had taken two doses of my Imitrex and naproxin and that did nothing. Normally when they are that bad I head to the ER and they give me a shot of Toradol and I'm good to go, takes it away within 10-15min. Well I didn't make it to the ER this past week. However, I did schedule an appt. with my dr. to talk about doing something different since the Imitrex isn't working. Tonight I spoke with the pharmacist who said they don't really give vials of Toradol to pharmacies since there are so many side effects. She also said that Imitrex is pretty strong and what is usually done is switching to a completely different type of drug. She mentioned something with a "max" in the name. But I'm curious what the rest of you take? Thanks -Emt1581 That would be "Topamax, a common Migraine preventative. Topamax is great. I can't take it anymore though because of the side effects. No migraine pills work for me. If I don't get Botox shots every 3 months, I'd have migraines every day. I use Relpax or Maxalt as backup. They're virtually the same medication. |

OTC, excedrin migraine. Failing that, any OTC painkiller and caffeine.

I recently had a 'complex migraine' which I thought was a full blown stroke. I would hear words but not understand them, not be able to utter more than 2 or 3 words without a 10 seconds pause to think of the next logical word in my sentence. ER doc did the toradol/reglan/diphenhydramine cocktail and it worked but by then most of the non-pain stuff had gone away. Got a prescription for imitrex and if I time it right it works, but its hard to do.
Its something I never want to experience again. |

Vicodin. Lots of Vicodin!! Wait they just rescheduled that out of average guy reach, so uhhh? Heroin lots of heroin!! View Quote Vicodin = hydrocodone. "Lots" of any opiates is a bad, bad idea. My experience shows that a small dose is just as effective as a large dose. I've also considered trying Kratom, which is an opioid. I've taken it in the past for aches and pains (and to try it), and it seemed to have much the same effect for me as hydrocodone. |

As much as I love Opiates, they are pretty useless for a migraine.
The Tryptans are fucking ace though. They work great. But I feel that the generics are not as good as the name brand by a large margin. |

When I feel one coming on 4 ibuprofen and an energy drink(not diet as fake sweeteners can accelerate the development).
Backup plan is whatever med I have. 1st choice is maxalt 2nd is imitrex 3rd is axert. Relpax, zomig, frova, and few others don't work for me. |

Maxalt left me feeling beat up with a shitty taste in my mouth, Mine start a tension headaches so if I jump on it early with advil Im good, But if Im in a full blown 3 alarm
just fucking shoot me in the head migraine ,Norco and a very dark and quiet room will have me back on my feet in half hour to 45 min. and not feeling wore out. |

Check with your dentist to rule out any parafunctional habits ie. teeth grinding and/or clenching, especially at night.
You mentioned you woke up several times during the night with intense pain in your skull. I've seen so many patients in my dental office that complain about daily migraines, only to take a look in their mouth and see a bunch of worn/chipped teeth from grinding, most often at night when they sleep. It may sound silly, but this nasty habit can cause a myriad of problems, one of the worst being severe headaches. This is a very complex topic from a physiologic standpoint, and requires some study of the musculature/anatomy of the head and neck.. There is a device called an NTI that is very popular in dentistry to treat grinders exhibiting headache symptoms. I would guess that at least 90% of dentists have used or currently use it to treat patients. I'm not saying its your cure, but its worth a look. More info can be found here: http://www.migraineprevention.com/ and here: http://www.nti-tss.ca/pages/whatisit.html Yes both of those websites are somewhat amateur and TL;DR, but the device, and its use, are no gimmick. |

The only thing that worked for me was midrib, and they took it off the market. I used it for 30 years, and then it was gone. FDA shenanigans!
Tried maxalt, etc. No dice. Now, I just dose with excedrin migraine and tylenol 4. Sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn't Migraines suck! |

[#21]
Take 3 bottles of Tylenol and drink a fifth of something 80 proof and I guarantee you will never have another migraine....
Seriously though the only thing that will really help is some sleep.

OP, I have tried most everything..when a kid I had a bad concussion(obvious to the world for 3 days) , and then this bad fender bender..whats been working for me the best..drink a soda, and get in bed(dark room) wrap my whole head with bagged ice and pray I die..works better then any of the meds once I have a headache(mine will go from 0 to full blown gnaw a shotgun barrel off in minutes sometimes..my worst kept me on the bathroom floor for 3 1/2 days with nothing but water......)

the Max you are thinking of is Maxalt. Mixed bag. works for some, not for me.
I have three levels it seems like: L1 - bad migraine: Take 2-4 excedrin THE INSTANT i feel it coming on, which means ears ringing and my eyes start trailing and my vision is black and white L2 - these are mf'ers. take 2-4 excedrin, a caffeine pill, and 1-3 Oxycodone/Percodan. Try to ride it out. Keeps the pain around a 6-7. Tolerable but not fune L3 - I actually get seizures, sometimes pass out, left eye blind, right eye severely compromised: go to ER, get demerol. the end. tried imitrex and maxalt. neither seemed to help much with length or intensity. I have noticed if I JUMP on excedrin and caffeine pretty fast it helps. To the point i sometimes take an excedrin or two on days I *don't* have a headache but am high risk. Around flourescent lights, tired, stressed etc... |

Maxalt, or Imitrex, but they're no picnic either. Usually I just suck it up, suffer and move on. I've become accustomed to the hell.

I had a few off and on over the years, but a few years ago, I started getting them very frequent and bad. I was getting one every week or two. Full blown classic migraines with aura and vomiting. My doctor tried just about everything and I was convinced something had gone wrong with my wiring...
I took my daughter to a neurologist for some testing and the topic of migraines came up. I told him what was happening and he said two things: absolutely NO caffeine stay away from lunch meats (nitrates) I had already heard this and had decreased my coffee intake and limited my nitrate intake. He said you have to stop them completely. Not just decaf and the occasional sandwich. I stopped both of them 100% completely and they went away. I haven't had one in over two years. If this isn't something you have tried, it might be worth it. |

you can tell the people in this thread who have true migraines and the ones who think any headache is a "migraine". my wife is the latter, she gets a "migraine" and 30 minutes after an advil or an excedrin, she's fine
