Mosin Nagants look better in Mil Spec.
Mine was an excellent condition one that was made mid war, but skipped all the abuse, somehow. The stock was petrified white pine(!?) or something equally ridiculous, with an alcohol based shellac surface finish, flaking off in my hands.
I redid the alcohol based finish. It wore right off in my hands again. I gave up on original finish material. I stripped and redid the finish as an exact looking duplicate with furniture stain and spar varnish. Now it looks original with a red-brown finish, except it is durable and waterproof. I managed to preserve all purple stock stamps and cartouches, too.
The sporter in the pic up top is fine,
IF you want your old cheap surplus rifle to look like a mass produced commercially sporterized 1950's or 60's deer rifle. I don't.
I wouldn't sporterize my Garand, Enfields, or Mausers either. My Springfield is original.
The best thing anyone can definately say about OP's pic is the walnut stock looks nice.
But I still don't like it. Which means I'm a bad person.
